My husband and I stayed for ten nights this time. We returned because of the locality of the hotel and for the unreserved friendliness and efficiency of all the staff, George, Kyle, Natalie, Zoe, and Lorraine who worked tirlessly to make sure we and all the guests at all times were looked after.
We booked a superior double room. The room was very nice. Spacious, clean and the bed was very comfortable. We had our balcony which we spent some time on which was very pleasant when the weather was good. Sad to say this time the weather wasn't as good as last years stay
The hotel is old and I didn't see any change from last year The tat is still there on the second floor mainly. But I suppose some people are interested in looking at it. The Walpole needs an good injection of cash and a total revamp whilst keeping the ambience of the place. I still love the veranda with the hanging baskets. Lovely to sit out on at any time of day (Weather permitting of course) And the beaches are only a stones throw away with lovely promenades for walks.
The hotel restaurant menu wasn't very exciting. We ate there a couple of times but found some lovely restaurants around the place The Ambrette Restaurant (44 King Street, Margate Old Town, Kent CT91QE) which is an Indian restaurant was a real find and a must if you visit Margate. It was unique, great service and the food was out on its own. And The Bangkok Thai Restaurant,( Northdown Parade, Prices Avenue Margate, Kent) This restaurant run by Malcom and Mai is a very intimate and small place. You bring your own alcochol if you so wish. They do not have a bar. I'd say the restaurant would hold not more than 30. Malcom and Mai ar every welcoming and friendly and when we were there the restaurant filled up very quickyy with people who seemd to be returning customers and knew the owners very well. The food was excellent and very different.
Over all our stay was very pleasant and relaxing.

Well located for views of the sea from every room, but not if you are concerned about walking out alone after dark.
The hotel is old and a bit worn, although there are some signs of refurbishment. It is advertised as being also a museum. Seemed more like a collection of random old items which you might pick up in a second hand shop.
The staff were excellent, helpful, friendly and efficient - special mention for George, the night porter who drew us a map of how to get to Sandwich, via park and ride.
Not much going on in Margate but can recommend Georgios restaurant, also not impressed with Ramsgate.
For our stay while attending the Open golf, the hotel was satisfactory and good value for money. Otherwise, I cannot see any reason for staying in Margate - go to Broadstairs.

Room Tip: Try the Loop bus service - it is an education.

I can only endorse all the previous positive comments that have been left for Walpole Bay, but feel that mention must be made of 2 special members of staff. Whilst we met with nothing but courtesy by all staff- Kyle & Natalie are without doubt the Jewels in the crown at Walpole Bay. Kyle is waiter/barman and even came to fix my bathroom heater within 5 minutes of asking ! He is an absolute joy and deserves the very best of luck in his further career.Natalie at reception is without doubt, the best receptionist I have encountered at any hotel(and that's alot of hotels !!)From the initial telephone booking to our departure, she was exceptionally helpful and ensured that our stay ran smoothly from start to finish. If only all hotels had a Natalie life would be so much more pleasurable ! I was lucky enough to stay at the hotel in late June with my sister- who is visiting from Australia. We both love the Walpole-all it's special features and ambience, plus the added bonus of such genuine friendliness from our charming host Jane Bishop, made it memorable for us. If you have a list of "To Do " things and you've crossed off Raffles Singapore- the Ritz in Paris and the London Savoy- put WALPOLE BAY on that list and visit when you can---you'll love it !

We were only going to the seaside for the day(our 20th wedding anniversary). In the car we decided to stretch to an overnight stay. The plan was to go to Hern Bay, but on arrival there, we weren't very impressed ,so carried on driving. We stopped dead in our tracks when we spotted the Walpole Hotel. My husband went inside to enquire and booked a room. On telling them that it was our 20th anniversary, we were imediately upgraded. When we saw our beautiful room(four poster, en-suite bathroom with bath, dressing room with chaise longe) we decided to stay one more day. My husband loved to play in the lift. It was quiet and fast. Breakfast was very good and plentiful,as was afternoon cream tea on the verranda and dinner in the evening. All the staff we very polite and helpful and Jane, the hotel manager/owner was an amazing, interesting lady. We shall definately be returning for a much longer stay as soon as we can. WOW!!!

We booked weekend away here without the kids and it was fantastic! From the outside the building itself is stunning, and is lovely inside too, very fitting to such a wonderful old building! We found our room to be nicely decorated, modern and well layed out, with the lovely addition of a small balcony...which we really enjoyed!! The staff were all very friendly...and we can not wait to return!! We didnt use the restaurant....but most certainly will next time!!!

I fell in love with this hotel the moment I walked through the door. It is gorgeous and a hotel from bygone times but not grubby or run down. Old fashioned elegance and charm and a lovely, modern well appointed bedroom. The proprietor, Jane, is lovely and welcoming and the hotel full of quirky objects. Had afternoon tea from lovely old fashioned pots and plates and later drinks sinking into lovely armchairs at the bar. A good buffet breakfast, ample onstreet parking and about a 10 minute walk from the town centre, and a hop from the sea. I can't wait to come back!
