“sign of the future of Margate”
Review of Margate Old Town

I was so impressed with all that has been done and is continuing to be done to bring back the Old Town to a pleasant interesting and impressive area. It all had such a pleasant 'feel'. The selection of small shops would more than do justice to an exclusive area of London and yet there was also provision for the future so that it was not 'over glossin' and my guess would be that reasonable rents and rates were enabling young shop owners to open up and develop.

Congratulations to all involved in envisaging and carrying out this rescue and development.

The old town area is crammed full of bijou cafes and quirky shops, so much so that we took 4hrs and didn't walk more than 200 yards! There is so much more to see than the tiny bit we did explore. Margate is really transforming from how I remembered it 10 years ago!

Such a pretty little part of the town. Lots of interesting shops and good looking cafes. Such a pity that there isn't more of it there!

Margate has really come up in the world over the last few years, partly due to Turner Contemporary and partly due to the transformation of the Old Town. For anyone that enjoys browsing round interesting independent shops, and eating in bijou little cafes, the Old Town is a must. Every time we go (only about once a year admittedly), it gets better and more expansive. There's plenty of retro/vintage shops, nice little independent boutique type shops and gallery shops. There is also a good choice of relaxed places to eat. Added to these attractions, it's only a couple of minutes walk from Turner Contemporary and from Margate's glorious sands. Well worth a visit.

Quirky little shops are great in moderation but if Margate wants to return to its glory days - or indeed survive - they also need to embrace the chain shops that keep most other seaside resorts thriving in the 21st century. This resort is in serious need of the likes of Pizza Express, Bella Italia, Nandos etc. This may not be a popular opinion with those to wave the independent flag but many tourists appreciate a touch of familiarity when on holiday. That's not to take anything away from this attractive little area with it's relaxed atmosphere...it's just that they need to cater for a wider section of society.
