This was our 5th visit to Margate and we could really see the difference with new shops, cafes, galleries, restuarants etc opening. Tee old town is a great place to wander about, stop for a coffee/bite to eat and pick up something really unusal from one of the shops.

“Margate old town”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

I had never been to Margate until last year until my son and daughter-in-law bought a second home there. They just love being able to get out of London on a Friday night and I just love visiting there, the people are very friendly and I love going to the shops in the old town. It has some lovely restaurants and cafes. There is lots of progress and it will be good to see the work on the front finished.

“Definitely worth a visit”
Reviewed December 30, 2012

Margate Old Town is a “quarter” that towns like Brighton would die for. It is a relatively small, quiet area of minor roads, a couple of squares and some delightful old buildings, including a reconstruction (admittedly from the 1950s) of an Elizabethan cottage and an old bank turned into a book shop. As you walk around, you suddenly catch a glimpse of something unexpected and full of character. All the same, it has to be said that quite a few of the buildings are in need of some tender loving care. On one side of Trinity Square, there is a row of houses that –with a little imagination- could provide the backdrop to the next BBC nineteenth-century costume drama. As well as that, plenty of places to eat and drink, antique and art shops to browse in, and all with so few people around as you stroll by. The range of buildings on the sea front with the large covered arcade can take your imagination back to another era. Perhaps you as a tourist can help provide the revitalisation and regeneration that it all needs. Only 90 minutes from London on a high speed train, which drops you at a station with a booking hall which is impressive now and must have been magnificent in its day. Margate Old Town is definitely worth the visit, but don’t expect perfection… yet.
