“Historic and stately venue, great location”
Reviewed February 13, 2013

The Imperial has a commanding view of the sea and itself looks very impressive as you approach the hotels inclusive car park. As a historic building you expect a few compromises when it comes to modern comforts on the whole the hotel does well to balance old and new. As an older building they are able to offer some unusual but welcome room formats including the family suite we had, this included a separate twin room and a foldaway bed - though I have to add this was in a very poor state of repair with the corners in rags.

We were welcomed on arrival in an efficient manner and the staff were generally friendly apart from when my young son went down to collect some extra plastic cups for our room (they still only give you two even though there were four in the room) he got the cups but was upset by the attitude of the receptionist.

It was very cold outside during our visit so it was a surprise to us that our room had all the radiators turned off for our arrival this may be due to Mercures Planet 21 Eco commitments whatever the reason it's not particularly welcoming at this standard of hotel. Our toilet flush was not great and the TV system was a bit idiosyncratic and not really up to standard for a hotel of this quality rating.

The swimming pool is good and the water quality was frequently checked but again for a top rating they need to clean surface patches of mould and algae around the cold surfaces near windows etc.

In general Accor seem to put in a high standard of management in hotels of this type and I would recommend a visit. However they do need to keep an eye on detail especially minor maintenance - we got a good deal if we had paid top price my satisfaction would be far less. If you get a deal go for it, an impressive hotel in a great location.

We only stayed a night in February but it was very relaxing. We had a sea view which was a really nice touch. Our room was quite big and spacious and the bed was comfy. The hotel was walking distance to hythe town centre and obviously you're right on the beach.

The decor of the whole hotel though was very old fashioned and dated, having stayed in other Mercures, I thought it would be more modern. There were a couple of tiles coming off the wall in the bathroom and there was paint pelting away in other parts of the room.

Our room was ridiculously hot overnight, we had the window open all night (in February) and were still too warm. Los the pillows were like tissue paper so were really uncomfortable, we didn't have the best sleep!

We didn't use the restaurant in the evening but the menu looked really nice. Breakfast had a good choice of foods and all seemed very fresh.

Overall it wasn't a bad hotel but it would appeal to more people I think if it changed a few things inside.

Many thanks for taking the time to write a review and I am very pleased to hear that you had a relaxing stay. This hotel is a Victorian building and we have tried to ensure that we retain the character of this historic building with the decor inside. We have, however, noted your comments and have passed your feedback on to our maintenance team so that improvements can be made to the room. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. alledgedly a 4 star hotel but would question how it got such a rating with such worn carpets, toilet facilities and a run down spa. Paint was peeling off the ceiling in the jacuzzi. The carpet in the room was thread bare. At least they had porridge available. The Mercure at Tunbridge Wells, where we stayed the following night, said they had run out! Will be checking with tourist board how they got a 4 star rating.

This is our 6th or 7th visit to this hotel and once again we have had a really enjoyable 3 night stay. I booked an Executive room with sea view for my husband's birthday and we have beautiful views out over the sea and also across the golf course. The room is large and airy and nicely decorated. I would definitely recommend booking a room with sea view as the hotel is right across from Hythe seafront and the views are really amazing. The staff are all helpful but we would like to say a particular thank you to Sam who was on Reception and who helped us when we were having difficulty logging on to the Internet. Lovely smile and nothing too much trouble. Great asset to have someone like him to greet you on arrival. Looking forward to our next short break here.

Room Tip: If possible choose corner room overlooking both the sea and golf course.

Our wedding anniversary falls on New Year's Eve so we were looking for something special and we found that at the imperial
I had booked a suite room with sea view and we were not disappointed our room was very nice with a four poster bed separate lounge area and nice bathroom.
The view from our room was stunning with a big storm blowing making our view stunning.
My wife had booked some spa treatments which she tells me were very good so if she is happy so am I
The New Year's Eve gala dinner was black tie and the meal was superb followed up with live band entertainment till 2 next day
We went to bed in a very comfortable bed the only complaint I may have is that the heating was too good and the whole hotel seemed too warm overall.
Breakfast New Year's Day was a sumptuous feast with a magnificent buffet and included just about everything anyone would like, we were very impressed.
Overall a very enjoyable experience which we will be doing again.

Room Tip: Get a sea view room it's worth it
