“Good Value for Money”
Reviewed July 8, 2012

We recently stayed for 1 night when we had come down to hythe for a party. On arrival we were warmly welcomed and shown to our room which was spacious and adequate for us.We had an evening evening meal and found the food to be outstanding and all the staff delighful and helpful. The breakfast the next morning was well cooked and considering there were around 30 other people having breakfast the service was very good
My opinion is that for the cost the hotel is more than adequate. The bed was comfortable and clean The bathroom a little tatty but the power shower worked fine.
There are other hotels in Hythe that charge 2 even 3 times the Swans rate and from experience are not as good. The decor may be 1st class and Sky Tv and hairdryers provided but the level of service is poor.
The only thing we will change when we stay again is not to park the car near the back of the building because the seagulls like to poo on the cars from the rooftops. Ear plugs also a must to block out the sound of the gulls at 4 am. But hey this is the seaside

We booked a family room at the Swan, then read the reviews on Tripadvisor, so were a bit apprehensive before we arrived, but we loved the place. No, it's not 5* luxury, but the welcome was very warm and all of the staff charming, helpful and gracious. Our room was clean and spacious, as was the bathroom. We ate in the adjoining Nepalese restaurant in the evening and the food was fantastic - guests receive a 15% discount. The breakfast was huge and delicious, which set us up rather nicely for the long day ahead exploring Dover Castle. Hythe is a lovely little town and the atmospheric streets and church behind the hotel are great for exploring and working up an appetite for dinner/breakfast. The family room we had (The Canterbury) is right above the main bar and was a little noisy, which is only to be expected on a Saturday night, but it wasn't loud enough to keep our little boy awake. Come 11pm, silence reigned (apart from the odd seagull, but, hey, you are at the seaside after all). We are very much looking forward to returning to the Swan.

We had an evening meal and the foot (Nepalese) was extremely good. You also get a 15% discount in the restaurant if you are a resident.

The room was ok, but there was very little storage and you have to run the tap for ages to get any hot water.

The hotel is extremely convenient for the Channel Tunnel (10mins by car) and for the food and location we would be very happy to return en route to France

Thank goodness I was not staying in the middle of winter, the hotel does not have central heating and after a cold wet April day this was not welcome. The only heat was from a small electric heater which could not cope with the large room.

The bed was comfortable but also did not give any warmth with only one sheet and blanket, no others were available. The bathroom was cold and the shower was at best only lukewarm.

The television only showed three channels, BBC2 ITV1 and C4.

My room was n the road noise until early hours.

The bar was very unwelcoming.

Be prepared to part with your money first and foremost; the only thing that they want is your money at Check in.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel

The only good thing about this hotel is the location - middle of Hythe.
The staff were unfriendly, almost to the point of being rude. Communications with the staff were difficult due to their very strong accents. Clear impression that they just wanted my money and to give as little service as possible.

The hotel itself was tired and the rooms desperately needed renovation – urgently in the bathrooms. The shower did not have much hot water and only the pressure was low.

Not a good night’s sleep. Single bed was very narrow. Extreme smells from the restaurant’s kitchen meant it was hard to get to sleep. Extreme noise from seagulls at dawn meant I woke up very early.

The car park was hard to find (access in a narrow lane behind the hotel) and had little room to manoeuvre – only suitable for cars smaller than a VW Golf.

Never again!!!!!

Room Tip: don't choose a room at all
