“Wild and Wooly”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Teaches you how vulnerable our coastline is. The remains of the church, abandoned in 1805 because of sea erosion made it unsafe, stand stark against the skyline and there are still the remains of an early Saxon church. Also the site of a Roman fort which was about two miles in-land when it was built in about 300AD. The whole area is steeped in history reflected in the name of the pub below the ruins The King Ethelbert which is also well reviewed on Tripadvisor. Great area for walking with views across the sea and countryside.

“Historic Herne Bay”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Easy access by car but prefer to take a walk along the path from Herne Bay or cycle to the remains of the tower and fort. Not too much to see but still worth a visit, not only for ancient history but also for its relevance as aiming point for 'bouncing bomb' trials during WW2.

“Interesting site and a great walk.”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

A walk to Reculver Towers along the seafront from Herne Bay is very pleasant with a stop off in the King Ethlebert Pub for a bite to eat and swift half before walking around the towers then heading back. It is hard to believe that years ago these towers were 2 miles inland and not right on the cliff top and of course our other claim to fame is that the bouncing bomb was tested here and the statue of Barnes Wallace overlooks Herne Bay seafront. For those who are less adventurous you can drive directly there and park quite close in the car park for a small fee. I do believe there is a nice picnic area close by also.

“Very interesting if you like historical buildings”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

The church towers and fort stand on the edge of the cliffs of Reculver but if you read the information in the Wildlife Trust Centre a few yards away you'll be amazed at the history behind it. How the land stretched out where there is now water and all about how the church was partly built from the roman fort remains. If you visit then check out the information at the Wildlife Centre as they he some very interesting leaflets and material there.
