We came down to Deal and went for brunch at The Black Douglas - we had to go to a table downstairs as the main seating area was full ( but only approx 6 tables) into a cellar looking room - this area was full of cobwebs ! We ordered our drinks at 10:50, the people on the next table were complaining about the fact they had ordered over 45 mins but still no food. 25 mins later our drinks arrived - the one lady who was serving did apologise for the wait. The tea was served in chipped cups. We ordered Eggs Benedict and two eggs on toast and waited, and waited, and waited .... after 58 minutes of waiting we decided to just pay for our drinks and leave. When we told them we were leaving as we had been waiting just under an hour for Food the lady just said "oh, sorry, we are quite busy" - on the way out we passed another table who were also chuntering about the length of time they had been waiting for their food. We for one won't be returning here as life is too short to spend waiting in The Black Douglas !!

Great place to have a coffee and cake, or even a full breakfast. Good main meal too, and all organic.

I love it, its just a step ahead of anywhere else really. The coffee is amazing, the staff are helpful and the quality of the food and drinks is outstanding. If you haven't been, you are missing out. By day a coffee shop, with excellent food, by night, a fantastic hand made pizzeria with a great wine list and that special something. I love it, can't wait to go back! I would literally recommend everything on the menu. Its all amazing! Places like this set Deal apart from other seaside towns.

A must place to go if you want somewhere a little rustic inside, farmhouse style tables with mismatched chairs which feel as homely and welcoming as the staff, where the ingredients come first! Stopped here for breakfast, not usually my thing, I find the English breakfast typical and boring, but not here! I started with a pot of Darjeeling tea, served in a china cup and saucer, and chose the eggs florentine, perfectly poached eggs served on hot buttered toast with just the right amount of perfectly made hollandaise (not too buttery) with a small side of spinach and a mountain of tasty ham. Wonderful! Wished I could stay for lunch as well, where they have an array of sandwiches and salads. Not everyone's cup of tea, but definitely mine! If you are looking for a decent well made tea or coffee, then stop here, right on the sea front and have a little something to go with it, you won't be disappointed. P.s don't stop here for sausage and bacon, it's not a greasy spoon!

The original tea room we wanted to visit was shut so we wandered around looking for somewhere to have a small bite to eat. We stumbled across the Black Douglas coffee house and were glad we went in. It is small inside and a little quirky with unmatching furniture and tables but this all adds to the charm of the place, it is fairly small inside so not sure how they would cope with large number of customers. There were 6 of us on a cold and damp April day. We opted for hot chocolate, tea and some home made cakes. The hot chocolates arrived in large mugs, looking lovely and frothy. The homemade cakes were delicious all served with a large dollop of creme fraiche. I had the ginger and cardamon which was very tasty, Mother in law had citron tarte and kids had chocolate cake. The slices were of a good size and ticked all the boxes. We did not have to wait too long - there was only one other couple in the coffee house as well as us. Good location right on the front - don't miss this one. Reasonably priced as well.
