A great place for coffee and cake or a very nice lunch. All the food is well cooked and the ingredients are first rate. It's a bit bohemian and arty and sometimes you may need to wait a while before being served but believe me it's well worth the wait. Oh and their breakfasts are magic!

We have been to the Black Douglas several times over the last couple of years. The food has never disappointed which has kept us coming back, up until now that is. It is comically chaotic and a mystery as to why it takes sooo long for food to arrive. We kept returning knowing we would be settled in for a wait and not being impatient people it would be okay. It is not. There is no reason one should have to wait over an hour for eggs benedict. It should not be a surprise that it is busy on a weekend, if you have the tables for customers to sit, you should have the staff to serve and cook. If I could split this review I would give a 4 1/2 for food & atmosphere (I like that you can bring your dog along to sleep under the table) and a 1 for experience, as it has certainly tested our limits.

I like a chilled out vibe where you can relax and read the papers. However, this is too much it is relaxed to the point of being a bit haphazard and to be honest I think the creative laid back vibe just disguises poor service as it is just too slow with my mushrooms on toast arriving about 35 minutes after my hot chocolate.
That said the food is really good and if the service was better it would definitely be a very good. The produce is fresh and of a good quality and the hot chocolate is strong, rich and creamy and not at all sweet. more of a cocoa reminiscent in my mind of how it might be at a Enid Blyton Boarding school.
Another bug bear is the menu's on the chalkboards not rustic and charming just really hard to decipher and decide what I want.

Quirky little cafe small but cosy, just over the road from the Royal Hotel in Deal. Food good especially the salt beef sandwhich, you can see the sea from the windows. Dont' expect fancy china, everything was miss matched thats waht added to its quirkiness.

A friendly, warm and eccentric cafe on the sea front, this is not the place to come if you're ravenous, or in a hurry. The staff are lovely but absurdly slow, which is part of its shambolic charm. And the wait is always worth it. Fabulous fresh soups, excellent coffee, imaginative sandwiches, delicious home-made breads, the best cooked breakfast in Kent and the cakes are out of this world (and wheat free!). This isn't a fast food restaurant. It's a place to meet friends, read the free papers scattered about, do a leisurely morning's work or daydream while starting at the sea. And all the better for it!
