“CHIP SHOP”

The Blue Mermaid Fish Bar
Ranked #57 of 110 Restaurants in Deal
Description: Traditional British fish n chip takeway with some limited seating. World class fresh fish, batter, hand cut chips, will definitely go back - worth the trip from London for this even if Deal were not such a good place to visit (which it is).

“This is a chippy not a restaurant...”
Reviewed March 1, 2012

Enough said! Cold and miserable place with good fish but really awful chips. To be avoided.

“best fish in town”
Reviewed February 4, 2012

Wonderful fish, freshly cooked. Fish and chip as it should taste. Not the cheapest in town, but you get what you pay for. Offers locally caught fish such as mackerel in season. All that taste and good for the environment too!

“Worth revisiting”
Reviewed January 3, 2012

We saw the sign on the sea-front offering sustainable fish so made a quick change of lunch plans. Not as 'alternative' as we'd hoped; only Cod or Huss (Rock Salmon - referred to as 'Rig' on the menu for some reason I couldn't work out). Skate not available that day which was a shame as that would have been my first choice. (Signs suggest mackerel offered between April and October) .
Deal fish and chip shops seem to concentrate on Cod and Haddock so it's good if there is somewhere that offers something else.
Fish was good - perfectly cooked. Chips were OK -reasonably tasty potatoes but not as crispy as I'd like. I would have preferred chips to be priced separately so that we could just have shared a small portion - there were far too many of them included with the fish and I don't like wasting food.
Proprietor was charming.

“Reasonable but pricey with small portions”
Reviewed December 6, 2011

I've recently been trying all the Fish and Chip shops in Deal to see which one is the best - The man who served me claimed his was the 'Best in the UK' - Not the case, Not even the best in Deal! Price wise they're a good 10-50p more expensive per item than the local average, There was only the one man taking orders and serving increasing service time and the portions seem average to small at best - I ordered medium cod £4.50 and it was the smallest one i've seen so far in all of deal. Flavour wise the chips were reasonably good and hand-cut but the batter on the cod was a touch soggy needing a few more mins cooking. Overall Fair but a bad price to portion to flavour ratio - Go for it if it's convienient and you don't mind paying a little extra but for me The Golden Fillet in Mill Hill has the best fish and chips in deal let alone the U.K. as he arrogantly proclaimed.
