“A night out with friends.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 5, 2013

A few days ago at the beginning of June, my wife and I along with two very good friends came along to the Sportsman for a meal. The meal, and the service were first class, with a friendly smile from the waitress throughout the evening. Also the wait between courses was just about right, The food was well cooked, and well presented. The atmosphere for the whole evening was warm and friendly.

My wife and I have, on numerous occasions, stayed in the en suit accommodation, and we have always found the rooms and facilities spotlessly clean, and with good tea/coffee making facilities, also there is a tv, and radio in every room.

I recommend it as a good place to eat or stay, or both.

“Sportsman should bat more homemade meals!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2012

I am surprised to read other reviewers praising the home-cooked food at this pub/restaurant. When I visited the only dish were were told was homemade was the suet pudding. The lovely-sounding smoked haddock and spring onion fishcakes (one of the day's 'specials') and the chicken kiev, were not, we were sadly told, homemade. We quite fancied the lemon sole, but that was not available. Not impressed by the other 'specials' which were basically fish and chips, we plumped for sirloin steak and chips (couldn't be faulted) and gammon with saute potatoes (a clean plate!). So no complaints there. We did have to wait a fair while though. I would like to see a more varied menu at The Sportsman as we did find it a bit limited 'pub grub'. I was also confused to see a neighbouring diner tucking into roast beef and all the trimmings when this dish wasn't advertised anywhere. Perhaps they were locals who know you can get a Sunday roast on a weekday evening if you give the password!

“Good Vaule for Money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 22, 2009

We had a family meal here 22 of us, we did not pre order but was told when we booked that this would mean a waiting time which we were quite happy with we all ordered of there specials bored £6.25 a dish all hoem cooked most had a roast diiner or suet pudding, we were all impressed as a home cooked meal just like you're gran would have cooked turned up after just 20 mins surprisling as the place was full. We all agreed it was one of the best meals we have out although smaller than somewhere like a toby carvery the food was all fresh, real roast potatoes just what we like desserts were nice. Good atmosphere the two little waitress work hard and were good.

Overall i would say a great meal nice people fantastic location. Best pub toliets i have ever seen.

“Traditional english pub grub with no frills.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 21, 2009

I would recomend this pub. The meat is sourced at a local butchers and the majority of the dishes are home made. The service can be a little slow at times but the chef jamie really knows how to cook meat, the T-nbone steaks are superb. The beer is well kept and the pub is atmospheric, with a local ghost. On the whole good value with a traditional English menu.

“70's menu. Poor service. Give it a miss.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2009

We went to the Sportsman for a family birthday celebration. Even though we had given our food choices well in advance and we were a group of about 16, the restaurant were not ready at our pr-arranged eating time and we were kept waiting for a full half-hour. When the food was eventually ready, it was served very slowly. It took a good 5 minutes or more to serve everyone so that the first plate of food was almost cold by the time the last person was served. All the chips were cold. The menu had stated a "choice of potatoes" so my son had ordered a jacket potato. It was only when our food was served that he was told jacket potatoes were not on the menu and was given roast potatoes instead. I don't really understand why the chef could peal and prepare roast potatoes but could not put a single potato in the oven for a jackety spud. Bizzarre. The salads were plain cos lettuce with cucumber and tomatoes. No dressings. No lettuce varieties or other items. Most disher were really quite disappointing. The worst was a dessert described as hot, fresh black cherries soaked in spirit. This can only be described as tinned cherries in something that resembled frog spawn (pie filling?). It had no alcohol in at all and was ghastly. No decaffeinated coffee available except instant coffee. Other coffee served with sachets of UHT cream.

The meal would not be so bad if the prices had been budget. Unfortunately, we were charged average restaurant prices for what was really poor quality food and poor quality service. Great pub. Great beer. Just avoid the food.
