We stayed at The George for one night to break up a journey - very busy Friday night however a table was found for us to eat in the restaurant and the meal was very nice, staff are the most attentive I have come across in a while. The only downside was the room, although it was nice, decor was pleasant and the bathroom was very spacious, if you like to sleep with your windows open avoid The Heather room - smokers more or less stand under your window so that along with noisy conversation was not a good combination. All in all a very pleasant stay and would stay again if we were ever in the area again.

Travelling for the first time with a small baby the staff here could not have been more helpful. Its ideal for children as they offer baby alarms so you can escape to the resturant for dinner undisturbed. As the hotel has a mix of rooms some are out of the way so you feel you won't bother other guests if the baby does cry. That said Aurum where we stayed overlooks the smoking area so don't expect a quiet night until the pub shuts at weekends! The room is full of character and is all creeky floors and beams. It could do with some attention decorating but for the price we thought it was great value.
Restaurant is overall good - although some over ambitious items on menu. Avoid the terrine - it was terrible and had shot it in. However our mains (lamb and duck) were good and the dessert lovely.
Its also dog friendly and has a cosy open fire in the bar so ideal for a winter break with the family and furry friends.
Cranbrook is a pretty town but not much to see so recommend visiting Tenterden close by.

Room Tip: all rooms are detailed on website - not all suitable for travel cot so ring ahead.

A charming hotel which is a little rabbit warren of rooms of nicely decorated rooms.

Our room was spacious with a quaint small door (my girlfriend and I are both over 6ft and the door was very, very small) into a bathroom which made our room look small!

The troubles we had:
- Bedroom was cold despite heating at max -the bathroom was very cozy
- The noise from the bar in the evening was very audible
- Service in the restaurant ranged from slow to pushy during the course of one meal!

Positives:
- Parking but blink and you will drive past the enterance, if you have someone with you they can guide you in once they have spoken to reception
- The food was of a very, very high standard
- A great selection of real ales

Have just spent 3 nights in this hotel in The Aurum roomor room 2 if you like.Lovely room overlooking the car park with beams and sloping floors, for anyone who likes oldy worldy buildings.Very tastefully decorated , en suite bathroom and flat screen tv,comfy double bed and separate dressing room.A hearty breakfast in the morning which kept us both going till the evening and used the hotel for two of our three evening meals. The food and the service throughout the hotel was excellent and I recommend it highly.

I booked this hotel as an overnight stay as we were dining in Apicius. We stayed in The Crimson Room and although a little dark, (it was dark paint and a dark carved four poster bed) it was fitting for the age of the hotel. The room was spacious and very clean.
We were made to feel very welcome by Martin, who was frindly and chatty.
The breakfast was very substantial and well cooked.
This hotel has a lot of history and we hope to revisit and maybe eat in their dining room.

Room Tip: If you like four poster beds - the Crimson room is for you!

My partner and I stayed at this hotel during January 2013. We ate the Apicius restaurant a few doors down and used the hotel as a base for this. We did however have a few drinks here and the bar area is lovely, with two separate bars.
The rooms are individually named, we stayed in the oyster room. It was spacious, biscuits, toiletries, dressing gowns, lovely shower, could to fault it. There was no noise from the bar as we appeared to be in a separate building attached at the back over looking the car park. The breakfast was a good selection and we didn't need to check out early.
Another reviewer mentioned you have to walk through the bar to check in. This is correct however it's not a massive bar and nobody pays attention as you walk through so that was not an issue as far as we were concerned.

On entering the hotel there were no visible signs for check in. We soon found it and wasnt greeted at all. the lady on check in was on the phone and did not acknowledge us in any way. I think she was talking with a friend. The room was lovely and clean apart from lots of dust and cobwebs, which had been there for some time. That's the negatives.

The positive is James the assistant manager, could not have done more for us and was a fantastic host. Having run 5 star hotels I would have no hesitation in employing James, and hope his employers read this and give him his own hotel to manage. Would return maybe, only not much to do in the evenings if you want to go out.

Room Tip: Go for the feature rooms, worth the extra.
