“Good fresh local fare”
Reviewed August 15, 2012

A great pub for walkers, locals and Freshwater visitors. Great seafood, good beers and wines too. When we last visited (last week on holiday) we had the most immense local duck leg dish - handsome! Also a very generous chicken caesar salad, with loads of succulent fresh chicken, superb salad and own caesar dressing. The bar area seating is a little random, which means some larger tables can get hogged by a few and the smaller ones end up getting cramped, but only an issue when it's really busy. Try the Eton Mess here for a real foodie treat.

“Great pub & food!”
Reviewed August 8, 2012

This pub is hidden away in the countryside near Totland (near the Needles) ........... it is an ideal place to eat if you are staying at the nearby YHA.

It has a warm & cosy atmosphere and serves good food real cask ale.

“Such a shame”

Very accommodating, friendly and helpful staff. But the crab was bad, off, rotten. And I don't think there's any excuse for that

“You lucky campers”
Reviewed July 29, 2012 via mobile

Ate here all three nights of our stay in the neighbouring campsite. Great variety of seafood and fish, friendly staff, the sort of pub everyone would like as there local. Ok it's not the shiniest, newest, swankiest place but it has tonnes of charm and character.

“A spolit evening”
Reviewed July 17, 2012

I went to the Highdown with a friend. We ordered fish and chips (me) and Lime chicken kebabs (her). She is allergic to mushrooms, but there was no mention that mushrooms were in the meal, and they were hidden. After a few mouthfuls she felt sick. She asked for water and for the barmaid to take the meal away. Although she got the water she was told by the bar maid that she was too busy to remove the plate straightaway. She was then sick in the toilets but asked me to finish my meal. As soon as she felt she was well enough to move away she went to pay for the meals and we were charged in full for both meals even though she had about five mouthfuls of hers. She was told if it was a problem she could phone and talk to the landlord on another occassion, but she had to pay before she left. About two hours after eating I was also sick, even though I don't have a food allergy. Two mains and two soft drinks were over £25. I assume those saying that the pub is good value aren't from the island as usually you can get cheaper, better quality food elsewhere. We both live on the island and will not return to this location.
