“Glass Factory is worth a visit”

The Needles Battery
Ranked #1 of 6 things to do in Totland
Attraction details
Reviewed March 19, 2013

Most of the shops etc were closed when we visited which is to be expected I suppose as we were there in early March.
The glass factory / shop was open though and that's well worth a visit.

The Needles battery give you an insight into how the isle of wight was defended, and the life of the soldiers. If you are a national trust member then you can get in for free.

One review mentions the tacky shops. Ignore these and take the walk rmto the top of the hill and to the battery where a tea shop awaits and the fantastic views of the needles and across the solent to the mainland and the new forest beyond.

Kids loved playing soldiers in the old battery and I think it was a shame the NT site was closed during half term for a better view of the place. Nevertheless a good walk that was quite easy despite it looking like a challenge from the car park.

Excellent piece of history. Old battery from WWI & WWII, designed in the late 1800s. Well worth a visit.

We visited as a family on a misty, atmospheric day. The sound of the foghorn carrying across the sea added to the secluded drama. Built as Victorian coastal defence, the Battery has lots of areas to explore - a warren of rooms with interesting historical displays, and a tunnel that gives a close-up view of the iconic Needles lighthouse. My son, a would-be Time Lord, loved the location and let his imagination run wild.

The coastal situation is stunning and dramatic; a must for anyone who wants to experience the island's raw natural beauty - cliff tops, magnificent sea and ancient landscape. And for an added delight, the charming cafe serves delicious home-made cake and robust tea served with a panoramic view.
