I left a good review after our first visit but second time we were very disappointed. Poor service, poor food. We shan't eat there again. I suspect it's haphazard management...seems the staff move around from branch to branch and don't really know whether they are a restaurant, a coffee shop or a rest area for employees. Sorry guys but you are going to have to raise your hurdle much higher.

Our first visit, at the recommendation of a Chinese friend. Atmosphere pleasant, though not plush. Tables rather too small for different plates. We had soup (£2.50); chicken and sweetcorn was above average with more chicken than most though otherwise much as you tend to get in the UK. My wife had the chicken and mushroom; again better than average with more mushroom and chicken than usual in the UK.

Next we shared the small (1/4) portion of crispy aromatic duck with six pancakes (£8.50). This was the same as most Chinese restaurants call 'Peking Duck'. The duck was very good; maybe a little dry but well-flavoured. The pancakes were good, but cold and the hoi sin sauce was nice. The cucumber and spring onions were nice and fresh. We very much enjoyed that course.

Next, we had chicken chow mein (£4.90) and beef chop suey (5.20). The chicken had more garlic than I like though my wife was happy and I think most would be (I don't like much garlic; the waiter said it is absolutely no problem to leave out certain things or ask the chef to alter the dish, we will try next time). The beef was very tough and gristly though the dish itself, with vegetables, was very nice. The quality of the beef did, though, let that dish down badly. Both of those dishes normally come with a rice accompaniment and they consolidated the rice into one (our choice) and served it as egg fried rice. The rice was very good. Flavour good and texture good.

Next, we had desserts. My wife had banana fritter with a scoop of vanilla ice cream (£3.70, I think) and I had the banana split (£4.50, I think). My wife thoroughly enjoyed the fritter. I enjoyed the split though the banana was a little under-ripe.

We had water and one J2O to drink, no wine, or other drinks, and the bill came to just under £40. I felt that it was average value, but acceptably priced and we will go back. The restaurant was already quite busy at 7.15pm and our Chinese friend who lives only a few miles away said that it is very popular. In summary, slightly above average UK Chinese restaurant, one that we will re-visit. Trip Advisor doesn't permit second reports on the same establishment for some months and I shall re-review when the system lets me.

I see there are no photos, yet. We didn't take any but maybe the owners will upload some on reading this first review of that branch. www.hongkongexpress.co.uk
