Gurnard Pines
Reviewed May 24, 2014

Just returned from a break at Gurnard Pines, after reading reviewwasn't looking forward to going.
Yes 1st impressions not good , needs some tlc, check in husdand said it was like "Holiday on the buses" everybody lined up. Couldn't understand why if your there a little bit earlier they wouldn't letppeople stay. WE STAYED IN A solent bungalow , suprised when we entered very spacious, clean not a horror story. On the whole as a base and the price a good place to stay.
What needs to be looked at is what most of the reviews are saying , look at the entrance, reception , cafe didn't look appetising, put money into the place. Ideal location just very run down. Hide the bins we know they are needed but don't need to be on show. Also we had a early ferry to catch coming home ,know we're to leave key , had to be left with people waiting for leasure centre to open. Would we go back again. Only if we could guarantee same bungalow and a good price

Room Tip: Go for the solent with hot tub not in front of bins

We went here on the Sun offer and it was a lot nicer than we expected. We only had the weekend (not long enough in the IOW) and never used the amenities, just used it as a base, we were in a cabin. It was very quiet and clean. The kitchen was well equipped and on arrival the reception staff were very helpful. Super views, yes a bit run down and rustic, I would def go back as a good base to see the IOW which deserves at least two visits!

OMG! SCRUFFY SITE. LOTS OF HEALTH & SAFETY ISSUES...Broken balconies with screws protruding at child height; the wooden decks, balconies and buildings we saw look as if they've never been treated so are rotting..uprights loose due to woodrot below ground level.

WHERE ARE SECURITY WHEN NEEDED?..At least 12 people were kept awake by our neighbours, till 3.30 a.m. They were jumping off the balcony fence onto the deck, non-stop; shouting, vomiting outside etc..at least 6 people. Another bungalow near us had screaming drunk girls using the outside hot tub half the night. We were told security was on till 2a.m...was he (only 1 man) ASLEEP? Or like us..too scared to say anything? If he was patrolling he would have heard& seen the commotion which started around midnight.

FILTHY SITE...BINS OVERFLOWING, BAGS TORN, rubbish strewn everywhere. It was hot so it stank and attracted flies. The glass bins had wasps all round.

NO PLAYGROUND..Some families were disappointed..we could hear them appoaching the playground, only to find it fenced off with 8' high safety fencing, weeds all over and ancient scruffy equipment inside...

NEGLECTED..The disused playground is next to the delightful bins, a small car park and a horrible mouldy plastic building with a green & white pointed roof; it was full of old furniture. This area seems to be the worst case of neglect on the site but overall we did think the whole place needs a facelift and a lot of maintenance. We were told there is 1 gardener and 1 maintenance man.... who is office-based! We wonder where the rental profits go as they do not seem to be being used for the upkeep of the site. The chalets looked clean but ours and 2 neighbours were full of ants, posing a real issue.

TREES..We were here in the 70's; we came back because we had fond memories. It could still be a beautiful site as it is set in woodlands and surrounded by trees. Sadly, those trees have not been managed and a lot are dangerously tall..it is clear that they suffered heavy damages recently. We are conservationists and it saddens us to see this NEGLECT..yes that word again.

FACILITIES..It seems strange that the poor old scruffy site pretends to be upmarket in the leisure area...expensive gym and various courses like yoga and spinning, yet outside pool is full of ducks and duck poo and the cafe/bar has a sad menu...all fried brown things and frozen pizzas. Overpriced, took forever and looked unappetizing.

NOISE.. We were tired on our first morning so wanted to chill at the chalet. On one side was a strimmer, the other side a lawnmower and another lawnmower in the next road. We were forced out. WHY can't they do this on turnover days? Or at least avoid visitors' first morning for God's sake! NOT A GOOD START OVERALL.

STAFF...We agree totally with another reviewer who suggested staff training in customer service; they could not have cared less. They are also missing opportunities..instead of telling us to go away and come back at 4pm on bookin in day, they could have offered to store our bags and pointed us to the cafe. Instead we were rudely told "No we're not ready for you yet..we don't let anyone in till 4". No 'sorry' or 'thank you' or 'would you mind' or 'perhaps you would care for a drink while you're waiting?'. I would sack my staff for such bad attitude.

SIGNS
After booking in, all the new holidaymakers like us were driving round in circles trying to find our chalets. There is a kind of plan in reception...but there are NO CONSECUTIVE NUMBERS it seems and NO ROAD SIGNS NOR NUMBERS AT ROAD ENTRANCES. This is really frustrating with a baby and grandma after a long journey. Some people were getting really annoyed. We are not stupid people, we have gps, maps and good eyesight..but we had to go back to reception to ask again where we should go!

MEMORIES.. we remember the 70's at Gurnard Pines; there was a shop, hairdresser, cinema, Sunday lunch and really good food at a sensible price. There was entertainment most nights and a good bar. Staff were great. The grounds were beautiful, the pool clean and supervised and any night-time disturbance was quickly stopped by 2 excellent security guards.

PROFIT AND LOSS
Presumably the site was running at a profit then; it was evidently worth laying on those facilities...most people stayed on site in the evening and used the shop or cafe for breakfast.
We saw a mass exodus of carloads every morning and again in the evening. People have cars now so sites need to work twice as hard as in the 70's/80's/90's to encourage visitors to spend their hard-earned holiday money on site. We found the pool and cafe over-priced..as we have a car, the council pools are much better value and we were not tempted at all by the cafe.

We CONCLUDED that Gurnard Pines has given up; that they don't really care if visitors come at all or if they are unhappy.. or even whether they return or recommend the place. It is run on a shoestring and looks shabby and run-down, dirty, unsafe and with bin areas that are a real health hazard. What a shame. SHAME ON YOU GURNARD PINES. Are you winding down the business toward liquidation?
If any business is struggling in the current economic climate, they deserve to be given a second chance if they are making an effort. This is not the case here. They are not even pretending to try.

Our ADVICE? DON'T GO THERE!

Room Tip: Go somewhere else...otherwise ask not to be near any Biffa bins/disused playground/car park.

Dirty, rubbish bins full, staff not very pleas and, in fact quite rude. Upon arrival looks deserted no welcome signs, reception staff need a good days training in welcoming holiday makers. No atmosphere at all, some chalets look pretty shabby, think they may be lived in all year.

We were on a cheap sun holiday and were returning holiday makers having been here 5 years previously. The villas were great with 2 bedrooms and an en suite to the main bedroom. We overlooked the woods and it was a very enjoyable holiday. The swimming pool was very good and if you had small children under 5 the inside play barn was fab. The bar was unfortunately not that good and was closed on our last night and it was only 8.30p.m and there is not a shop on site but a very well equipment shop was just down the road. There was a great pub about a mile away that overlooked the beach and solent the menu was very good so good we went back a couple of times. I can see that this holiday is not that good if you have older children but they are slowly improving things. I would recommend this holiday to couples and anyone that wants a chillout break. There is decking to the outside with table and chairs. We had a great holiday and look forward to coming back hopefully when there has been a bit more improvement to the resort.

Room Tip: bring as much food as you can to avoid having to go shopping when you get there

After reading reviews, expected the worse. Reviews are correct upon driving onto site, it looks untidy! Stayed in a 3 bed villa ( bungalow), with a hot tub. The villa was spacious, well equipped, very nice to have a dishwasher ( no washing up to do). Lovely en-suite, Great for grandparents. Beds made up. Great Hot Tub ( definitely made the accommodation), very private situated, hot on arrival, ready to use anytime. Staff at reception very helpful, on directions, showing us round pool area. Which was very clean, changing rooms immaculate, staff provide armbands, floats for grandchildren. Did not use gym, but looked well equipped. Grandchildren went on one activity, which was well supervised.
Downside ; Beds not that great, but ok for a weeks stay. TV, quite old, but has preview, DVD player. To be fair, did not watch it a lot, as out and about.
No shop on site, but took enough supplies, and visited supermarket in ryde, about 10 miles away.
All in all had a very pleasant week here. Nice place to return to after days out.
Location is rural, set in woodlands, but as Island is small, you are never to far from the sea.

For the life of me i can't understand why some people are slating this place the villas are spacious comfortable and in a nice setting this is the second time we've stopped here. The staff are friendly and The site was clean and tidy. The bar closes at 9 and there is no entertainment line up but for us this didn't pose a problem. It's an ideal base to enjoy the island from. If you want to get plastered and leave your children running wild under the supervision of a bunch of 18 year olds dressed as teddy bears this is not the place for you! We will definitely return here again.
