“Great stay but a bit pricey!”
Reviewed August 30, 2011

From the road, you wouldn't think that this Hotel was anything special. However, it's a bit like a tardis once you get inside. Beautiful property, very quirky and full of antiques and nik-naks. We booked a balcony room and chose the one at the top of the property (basically, the attic) The room was lovely, spacious and clean and the views over the Solent were fabulous. A hearty breakfast is served here - fresh fruit, yoghurts, cereals, juice as well as a choice of cooked items from the menu (we went for the full English and were pretty full up!) toast, tea and coffee.

The staff are great and very attentive to your every need - Thank you Jackie for your directions.....we made it!!

I would go back and I would recommend this Hotel, however, you do need to have deep pockets as I do think the nightly rate is pretty steep. I'm not sure if this is because of the location of the Hotel but we have stayed in other lovely Hotels on the IOW for a lot less.

We rented the villa for ten or so of our clients for a one night stay on the island. The villa is really quirky inside with some great views overlooking the Solent. The rooms are also quirky, if a little dated, however the bathroom in my large room was brand new. They could do with a little updating IMHO but I think thats part of their "style". You don't come here just for the rooms though. The service here is of the highest order and for that I would return. I have never been to a hotel (and I travel most weeks on business) where after asking for an iron the staff suggested they ironed the shirt for me - truly outstanding service. We were offered free lifts to and from Cowes which was great. On leaving (after having a great full english breakfast) we decided to walk to the harbour to catch the Red Jet and were asked if we wanted our bags dropping off so we didn't have to carry them down - brilliant! Honesty bar in the lounge which was well stocked too. If you are going to Cowes and don't mind funky surroundings then this place wont let you down.

Room Tip: 228 - big - brand new bathroom and great views

Room had a nice sea view, but...There were large damage holes in the door and walls. Exposed cables and pipes in the wardrobe. Tiny bathroom with a dirty shower screen. No hotel information pack. Very dirty surround to the patio doors and rusty iron railings to balcony. Only one very small bottle of water supplied in room. Breakfast was OK

We have not stayed here overnight, but have had two very special meals here.
Villa Rothsay is 10-15 mins walk from the West Cowes ferry terminal (though the owner, Margaret Ankers, is happy to pick up guests from the Terminal in her own people mover) with an externally unimposing Victorian villa frontage.
Once welcomed through the door, however, the delights of a characterful wood-panelled hallway are revealed, with displays of sailing and boating memorabilia, and thanks from previous famous and yachting guests on display.
The living room is in an elevated position facing North across the Solent with extensive views from two windows and many comfortable sofas and chairs.
The dining room is on the floor below with similar views.
Both times that we have been, the food has been of an excellent "country house" standard, most recently with a joint of rib of beef to die for.
I cannot stress highly enough how pleasant the welcome and ambience are and how much you are made to feel like an honoured guest.

One of the most characteristic small hotels you are ever likely to stay at in the UK. A short ride from Cowes harbour (Margaret the owner will be glad to collect) leads to a somewhat bland entrance which soon blossoms out into a 4 storey Victorian mansion overlooking the sea. Excellent food and a self-service bar in the most fascinating hotel around. All rooms well equipped and comfortable. The mixture of sporting pictures and cups with literature and antiques give a very special experience.

We loved our stay at Villa Rothsay. It was pricey, but most places were. Margaret, the owner, treated us with great care, running us to the ferry early in the a.m.

I've stayed a couple of times at the Villa Rothsay in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, and was excited to see they are finally up here on TripAdvisor. I really have nothing but wonderful things to say about the Villa. The Villa offers a bed & breakfast type of stay, but many of the conveniences of other hotels. The owner, Margaret, really goes out of her way to make your stay wonderful and to help with anything she might need. She even picked up some collegues I was travelling with at the ferry terminal with her own car!
Meals at the Villa are really a feast. Dinners consist of a choice of main courses and appitizers and feature brilliantly prepared carved meats and fish. They can even accomidate vegetarians nicely. There are more side dishes than you can eat, and no one leaves hungry. After dinner the pleasure is sitting around the fireplace and lounge area upstairs where there are a great selection of drinks and snacks and games. Breakfasts are wonderful and you get a choice of a full english breakfast, or whatever else you might prefer.
The rooms are very comfortable with nice beds, large flat-screen TVs, and an english tea service. There is wi-fi in the rooms, and the views of the water are amazing.
I really have nothing but great things to say about the Villa. The only tinest thing of note is that it is a bit of walk from downtown Cowes. But, there are plenty of taxis and worse comes to worse, Margaret can arrange something for you!
