“a good pub”
Reviewed February 16, 2014

The landlord is a real character and they strive so hard to please. The food has always been good.We often just call in for a drink or sit in the garden in the summer with our dog.

“Lovely rural pub”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

Had lunch with a friend on Friday 27th December after walking through Ashridge. It has a lovely rural feel, ideally located at the foot of the Ashridge Estate. Being holiday time it soon became very busy. However, we arrived just after 12 and chose the Ashridge burger and fish & chips. Both were excellent and with good food, an ideal location, the day was rounded off perfectly.

Recommended.

“Excellent Lunch”
Reviewed December 26, 2013

We visited this lovely pub during a walk in the area. It was Boxing Day and very busy. The waitresses were extremely helpful, polite, efficient and needless to say, they were Eastern European. I had game pie and my husband had fish and chips. Very nice decor - thoroughly a very pleasant experience.

“Excellent lunch at Valiant Trooper”
Reviewed November 18, 2013

On the way back from Champneys Tring I was pleased to find this pub which is very close to Ashridge, so very convenient after a walk in the woods. There were many things on the menu which I fancied eating, but after 3 days of healthy eating I chose sausages, home cooked baked beans and bubble and squeak. The service was very prompt and the food was excellent, and i was keen to get on the road to avoid later traffic this was an ideal break. The village is also very pretty and worth a quick look round.

“Huge portions and friendly atmosphere”
Reviewed November 4, 2013

Paid a mid week visit for lunch. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of people there. A real mix of locals.families, walkers, workers etc. We hadn't been in a while but still got a cheery 'hi, nice to see you again'. We ordered a plough mans board each -one fish, one cheese thinking we would mix and match. Well the size of both was huge. I had smoked mackerel, rollmop, enough prawns to fill 2 sandwiches and smoked salmon. The cheese version was similarly generous. Along with plenty of bread, salad, pickles and sauces. All very fresh and tasty. Yes it was only a plough mans lunch but so many pubs get this badly wrong. The Valiant Trooper gets it right! My only suggestion might be to share one if you are not too hungry. The only reason that I haven't put 5 stars is because it can be quite cold in there and I like to take off outer layers when inside. Otherwise it's a lovely, proper country pub
