We often go to the Guru, excellent service and great food. Best to book in advance as can become very popular. Best in Hemel! :)

I have raised this restaurant following a previous visit as the food was great but the last couple of times we have been there, the very poor service has put us off going e
again even though the food is still good. We went there on a week night and were ignored while a large table were served, even though we had ordered before them. We even waited 40 minutes for a coffee. My son went there with his girlfriend last month and waited half an hour before his order was taken then an hour for his food to arrive. They need to employ more staff and be a lot more attentive to customers.

This is our regular Indian restaurant for eat in or takeaway for the last 20+ years!
Food is always good, however, service can be a bit slow as they are often busy.
The owner takes a lot of pride in running the restaurant, including all the unseen things like food handling and storage.

Went to the Guru on one of their Banquest nights. Arrived about 7.30pm, the Restaurant was very busy. My OH and I were shown to the "take away" waiting table and asked if we would wait there whilst a table was available. We ordered drinks and poppodums whilst we were waiting. Within 15 mins we were shown to a table. We waited approx 10 mins for our starters- Prawn purees x 2 - very flavousome with the right amount of coriander. Our main course arrived approx 15 mins after our starters had finished 1x prawn dhansak with onion bhajias on the side & a garlic nan /1 x vegetable Shobji vindaloo with sag paneer on the side & a garlic/chilli nan. Considering the Restaurant was fully seated at all times and extremely busy, there was no scrimping on service or quality of food. The head waiter asked us on 2 occasions if our food was ok and his asking was not intrusive to the point where we just wanted him to go away. There was so much to eat that we asked for a "doggy bag" to take the remainder home, as there was enough left for the both of us. After finishing our food, the table was cleared within 5-10 mins of finishing, so no hanging around with dirty plates in front of us ( a pet hate of mine!). We asked for the bill and were asked if we wanted a complimentary drink, which was declined, due to the fact that we could not wedge no more food or liquid in.
One word of warning - reserve your table because we were lucky to get a table, as some customers could not be accomodated whilst we were there, as the Restaurant was so busy.
Overrall the food was excellent, the staff friendly and welcoming, the atmosphere of the Restaurant was comfortable (although a little dated - but acceptable).
Would highly recommend.

We frequent 'The Guru' when we stay in the area for work, as our head office is nearby. You could consider us 'regulars' and as such we are known by the staff and always receive a very warm welcome, the staff really go out of their way to ensure we have a great meal.

It's a small restaurant, some may say it's a bit dated compared to some of the more contemporary Indian Restaurants - but that's part of the charm, as it's quite cosy and welcoming. This is your 'traditional' UK Indian restaurant experience, and I for one, appreciate that. A few popadums, a nice curry & naan bread, with a bottle or two of Tiger beer - you can't really go wrong.

Food is generally good, I've tried most of the menu and it's all been enjoyable. The only dish I didn't really enjoy was one of the fish dishes, which the Waiter commented didn't get ordered that often, so maybe the chef was out of practice on that one! It wasn't unpleasant, just not up to their usual standard. Be warned though - the Jalfrezi is one for the chilli fans - their green chillies are pretty powerful and the unprepared can struggle with the heat. I particularly enjoyed the Prawn Puree starter - one of the best I've tried. In my experience, the foods are well spiced and the chef knows what he's doing, although I did spot the odd bottle of Pataks out the back, including the Lime Pickle, so they are taking a few short cuts, not that it matters, as the end result works.

Value is also pretty good - and a fair price for what's on offer. This isn't a gourmet Michelin starred restaurant, but they are not charging gourmet prices either so the price/quality equation is even balanced. I'll definitely stay a loyal customer!
