We stayed here for our wedding anniversary, checked in fine, room was a classic double which was a nice big grand room, comfortable and clean, furniture did look a little tired but expected.
Grounds were beautiful even had a cat and peacock roaming when we had a drink outside. There were 2 weddings and a mystery murder night taking place which I must say looked good fun! We had a meal in The Grill Room which was nice, breakfast was good too, only warning is they start clearing up on the dot at 9.30 which I and another guest found a bit off. Pool was still closed for refurbishment which I might add it looked like nothing had been touched in there since the incident earlier on in the year, shame they can't get it back open.
Overal I would recommend this hotel for a night away from it all, pleasant enough in nice surroundings if a little tired but you do see this in older hotels.

Stayed for one night on a Murder Mystery break.

A lovely, characterful hotel with the charm and elegance of a Georgian mansion.
However it is in need of some basic TLC and the food we had at the Murder Mystery event (a set menu) left a lot to be desired.
The room we had was large and comfortable but some of the furniture and accessories are a little thread bare.

Room Tip: Rooms on ground floor and first floor are cooler than those above. Top floor rooms are hot even with...

We stayed on a voucher deal and from that point of view felt it was good value but we do have some criticisms. The approach to our room on the second floor felt like we were going up to the servants quarters. Up to the first floor is a grand staircase but up to the second floor is via a threadbare carpet. The room had a standard size double that was very uncomfortable as the mattress was too springy. This is the second time this has happened to us lately, I hope it is not becoming the norm. Only one high back chair under a desk and my pet hate, a TV that shows lime green grass. Why can't hotels colour tune! View to the rear nice enough but some of the panes of glass need renewing as the seals have been compromised. Not a room you want to spend time in. It was clean, however and very quiet.

Not wanting to stay in the room we gravitated downstairs. Bar prices very high but not more so than any other hotel. Just personally feel that they are not justified!

On the plus side, we enjoyed our included dinner in the Grill Room but agree with a precious reviewer, don't like all the supplements. Found the breakfast in the morning to be very good, plentiful and particularly liked the sausages.

Level of service was very good, no complaints there.

I have recently taken over as General Manager at Down Hall at a very exciting time as we are undergoing a major refurbishment of the bedrooms in the West Wing this will include public areas so the feeling of going to the servants quarters will be a distant memory. Alongside the refurbishment we also have our new Spa facility which will open in March 2014 replacing the swimming pool. Thank you for taking the time to write your review and I look forward to welcoming back in the future.

Visited Down Hall last night as part of a Murder/Mystery night package. Firstly, the entertainment section of the evening was wonderful, with a professional company playing out a great murder/mystery. It was let down by the food & the accommodation. It was a set menu, which was not advised in advance with only vegetarians being offered an alternative. In addition, there was not enough staff and we waited quite a while for the food. But what was probably most disappointing is the tiredness of the magnificent rooms in this country house set in wonderful surroundings. It may have been said before on this forum, but a major overhaul of the accommodation & public areas is well overdue.
Swimming pool shut down & currently being converted into a Spa centre.

Room Tip: Rooms numbered 300-320 are ground floor with French windows onto the extensive lawns. Pets allowed!

My wife and I attended a wedding in Essex and stayed for two nights B & B at this hotel. The building is impressive and the grounds nice to walk in. The breakfast was very good and fresh on both mornings. We had a ground floor room as requested looking out onto woodland and we saw deer wandering amongst the trees and bushes. It would have been an enjoyable stay except for one thing. The hotel allows guests to have their dogs with them in the rooms and we had one both sides of us and they barked at everything keeping as awake. I complained to the night porter and the matter was resolved but we had no warning of this possibility and thus will not stay there again. To add insult to injury my wife lost a sapphire from a ring whilst we were there.

Room Tip: One away from where dogs are likely to be with guests.

Had a set menu lunch with friends recently and we were all pleasantly surprised with this country house situated in a quiet backwater of the Essex countryside. The menu was good with adequate choices and a reasonable price. The weather was superb and we ate outside but there were lots of wasps around wishing to share our meal! The waiter eventually put a small pot of honey on an adjacent table where they enjoyed themselves even more especially after my wife had dispatched a couple. Not the hotel's fault of course. Grounds of many acres are wonderful and there are walks galore and even a large scale chess game in the open. Would happily revisit this characterful house even if it is a little tired in places.

It would be hard to beat the value of our one night Travelzoo stay. Spacious room, huge TV, friendly staff and good food. Dinner was included in our package. If not, the Grill room food would have been overpriced at £32 for 3 courses and there are huge supplements on some items. Wine was rather expensive but considering the deal we had we have no complaints and would be happy to return. Breakfast was excellent. The building is very attractive and set in lovely grounds.
