“A perfect romantic hideaway”
Reviewed February 13, 2013

Me and my partner stayed at this hotel for one night through a secret escapes offer. What a bargain it was.
On arrival you are immediately hit with the outstanding beauty of this place. This is carried on through the hotel with its quaint country house feel. Yes, some of the furnishings need some love but thats what you expect when it is as old as some of it looks.
Our room was perfect, so much bigger than expected and everything that was needed was right there. The bathroom was also much bigger than expected with an amazing shower.
We did have a table booked for dinner, however, we chose not to dine in and cancelled our table. Once again, not a problem, no questions asked just simply asked which name and cancelled it. We did however, go to the cocktail bar for a drink, they were over priced but thats what was expected after reading reviews and from the quality of the hotel. We then ventured across to the leisure area...which consisted of a snooker table, a treadmill, a cross trainer, an exercise bike and a pool.
Although the pool was small it looked very clean and tranquil...made us wish we had taken our swimming stuff!
The bed was the best nights sleep we have ever had...my partner is quite a snorer and (even after having several drinks!) he didn't snore due to the quality of the bed! Breakfast the next day was lovely and the staff couldn't do enough to help.
Overall, this was an amazing night away and cannot wait to stay again.

A magnificent building and grounds, but several areas are looking tired and need refurbishing and a general smartening up. There is a general tiredness and lack of attention in several areas. A great pity as this hotel has such good potential.
We were on a special offer with Secret Escapes which was just as well as there is no way we would have wanted to pay the full price as even at our reduced price it was not that good value.
Naturally the excellent grounds will be better appreciated later in the year when it is smaller, but there are several pot holes in the driveway and car park that should be filled in.
We arrived early and requested a room overlooking the grounds, which we did get in the end after a lengthy discussion with a very unhelpful receptionist, who said we should keep returning to her desk until one became available. We asked her to just put one aside for us and we would return later in the afternoon. She said not possible for no reason, but when we did return a suitable room was available for us. When we requested to see some rooms so we could choose we were told this was not possible.
The room and especially the windows, and curtains needed a good clean, but the curtains were badly worn and torn. The room was spacious and good bathroom but on the whole quite depressing. Again may be better in the Spring or summer.
The fitness centre and equipment can only be described as pathetic. Then door heated pool looked again drab but actually was surprisingly good, although the changing rooms were poor and the women's sauna was out of order. Surprisingly you can only enter these facilities by going out through the grounds as there is no undercover or indoor entrance.
I think the staff uniform could be worn smarter by the staff.
Breakfast was very good, both quality and choice. The waitress staff extremely good and attentive, as well as being very pleasant. I asked for a cheese omelette which was not on the menu but they served me an excellent one without any hesitation.
There is nothing here really that would make us want to return unless we needed to stop in that area.

Room Tip: Have a look around the hotel when you arrive and ask to see a choice of different rooms before accep...

We went to Down Hall recently for a one night stay plus the murder mystery evening.
The staff that we encountered we're all very friendly and welcoming. The murder mystery dinner was really great fun and the food was absolutely fine.
The hotel was buzzing with activity - there seemed to be something going on in every corner of the hotel. The people who run Down Hall are marketing it very well. It is not a serene stately home kind of a hotel- which is one way they could have gone, but is aimed more at a mixed clientele.
My only complaint and for me, the reason I will not return is that the light above the bath was a dead fly cemetery. I woul estimate that about 30 odd flies had met there maker in that light fitting.
My husband was prepared to unscrew the fitting, but we decided against tampering with hotel property in the end. The room was actually very nice, but for me this was unexceptable - it didn't bother my husband and probably it wouldn't worry most people. Personally I felt housekeeping should ave picked this up.

It was our second time at Down Hall, both times with offers from Groupon or Wowcher. Both times have been enjoyable but very different. When we stayed in Summer 2012, the hotel was full of wedding parties, which made the communal areas crowded, but clearly everyone is in a happy mood. The restaurant was good and service was friendly. When we stayed in February 2013, we tried to book dinner a few days before arrival, but the restaurant was full due to a number of offers running. Staff recommended The Thatchers nearby for dinner which proved an excellent alternative with cabs approx £6 each way. This time, there were few weddings so it was easier for our party to get a seat by the bar later in the evening.
Down Hall is excellent value particularly with offers available. It is an imposing venue and whilst a couple of areas or rooms might seem a little tired, I think this reflects its popularity. A key strength is the staff in all areas, who are helpful and cheery. Are there any downsides? I would recommend it for groups of at least four, as it is very popular for parties and weddings and possibly could be oppressive for a couple . Restaurant is very good and reasonably priced although oddly the bar prices seem higher than would be expected. I would also check availability of the restaurant when booking, but the local alternatives were excellent if needed. We will happily return, I am sure.

Room Tip: West wing is particularly great.............but don't tell everyone!

Went with some trepidation having read some reviews that totally slate this hotel.
The hotel itself was beautiful and our standard room was fantastic... good size , clean and nicely furnished. I was very impressed. The communal areas were nice and comfortable. The pool and games room were a bit tired looking and could be improved. The bar prices were fine apart from the wine which was astronomical! About £7.50 for a glass of rubbish Pinot Grigio. I don't mind paying this price if the wine was actually nice.
The food at the event was much better than I expected having read previous reviews. it was a set menu of pate, pork with veg and creme brûlée. We did not make breakfast unfortunately. The event itself was not what I expected. i was unsure what was happening and what we were meant to be doing. I found it a bit haphazard and could have been improved.
Despite the negatives I would definitely stay at this hotel again and would recommend (though not for the murder mystery), we really enjoyed our stay!

The hotel is set in beautiful grounds and is quite a magnificent building. I had booked just a 'Classic' double room, but as we were there to celebrate my partner's birthday, I was willing to pay for an upgrade, if necessary. However, when we saw the room, we were impressed with it and decided to keep it. It was very spacious with a large bathroom (no window unfortunately) and all the usual tea/coffee making facilities. There was a seating area and in the wardrobe useful things like an iron and board, plus a fan. Some of the furniture - the dressing table, for example, - were a little tired looking, but they sufficed. It looked out over the back of the hotel, with views of a grassy area, adjoining woodland and countryside in the distance. Consequently, it was very quiet and peaceful. The hotel was running some special offers, so there were people around, but it was certainly very quiet in the corridor areas for the whole time.
We ate dinner in the restaurant and although my main meal came up rather tepid, it was immediately dealt with - taken away and a fresh meal cooked for me. Brilliant! The breakfast was more than satisfactory and all the staff we encountered were friendly, helpful and efficient. An enjoyable stay and I would definitely return.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel are certainly peaceful and I suspect that the first floor rooms in th...

We needed a relaxing weekend away from it all after a particularly difficult time and were not disappointed. Magnificent building amidst some lovely countryside. We had the feature room in the main building which was a little tired but extreemly quiet and comfortable with a splendid view across the grounds and fountain. The main entrance hall was a mass of sofas and comfy armchairs some around an imposing fireplace with a real fire blazing. The staff were very accomodating and you only had to ask to get anything you needed....ie ice bucket or poached eggs! (see previous reviews) The pool was a little disappointing but possibly because we are used to a larger and more extensive complex . The menu was limited but cooked to perfection and again if you wanted alternatives then we asked! There was a lot going on over the weekend, various Murder Mysteries and weddings but it did not detract from our experience, in fact it was quite entertaining in places. They also have facility for dogs! Altogether a lovely weekend.

Room Tip: Main building is quieter.
