“First Class Hotel and staff”
Reviewed August 5, 2012

Just back from a 2 night stay at Beales Hotel using a Travelzoo offer. Aboslutely every member of staff was polite, curtious, helpful and above all happy. The lovely receptionist (expecting her first baby daughter in 6 weeks) booked us in and offered us an upgrade FOC. We declined as it was only available for the first night but it was very nice to offered it. ...maybe next time :0). The decor of the hotel is fabulous and has been well maintain in the 8 years since it was updated. Our room was spacious, clean and everything supplied that we needed and with aircondioning. Good use of space to accomodate mini ironing board and iron, tea & coffee making facilities, 2 mini bottles of wine on both nights and bottled water were supplied in our room. Our deal also included a 3 course A La Carte meal in their Outsidein Restaurant and full buffet breakfast for both days. The food was fantastic and well presented and our compliments to the chef. All the staff we encountered were so attentive and considerate both professionally and personally. They work hard and we noticed several doing double shifts all weekend but they maintained their professionalism throughout. We know that this was an absolute bargain and a had a very relaxed and spolit weekend. The only thing that we could have done with was a firmer mattress so next time we will enquire when we next book this hotel which we have already decided will be to attend their New Years Eve Black Tie Ball.......Check it out on their website. Across the road from the hotel is the Galleria Outlet Mall. Outside the entrance to the Galleria there are several bustops and we paid £4.20 each for a day ticket and went into Welwyn Garden City. Lovely shopping centre and the high street shops are in and around the pretty gardens. St Albans is also very close but we did not have time to vist but certainly will next time. Most highly recommended. *******

Wow what an incredibly comprehensive review !

I am so glad we looked after you so well and that you enjoyed your stay at Beales Hotel.

It sounds like you had a fantastic time !

Yes, St Albans is definitely worth a visit on your next trip to the hotel, as it is a wonderful Roman city with the remains of Verulamium, a terrific Roman museum, and the Norman Cathedral of St Alban.

I am very glad that you had such a memorable weekend and it would be a pleasure to welcome you back to the hotel in the future.

Kind regards,

Just back from an Evening Meal, B & B and overnight room Deal. Got a free upgrade to an executive room which was roomy, huge bed, bath with shower, lots of mirrors, A/C and room safe.
Evening meal really was excellent, breakfast scored only average as the sausages, hash browns and bacon all ran out (but at least the bacon was replenished) and this was 40 minutes before the close of service! Flat mushrooms replaced by button ones. Conveyor toaster machine is always welcome. Coffee dispensed by waiters - if coffee pots were left on the tables it would relieve the pressure on the breakfast staff. The staff were very good generally although our welcoming receptionist had no smile. We have had evening meals at their Outside-In restaurant before and they have always been excellent.
Hatfield Galleria is just over the road and St Albans is also nice to to visit- 20 minutes away by car.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked the car park -OK as it was a fairly quiet Friday night and with Air Con the traf...

Thank you for reviewing Beales Hotel following your recent visit.

I am glad we looked after you well, although sorry that the welcome on reception was not a smiling one as it should have been and that breakfast was not 100%.

How nice to come from just up the road in Stevenage to the hotel for the night without any of the hassles of a long journey !

Do come again soon, and thank you for the review.

We stayed here for one night dinner bed and breakfast shame it wasn't more!! The service was excellent both at Reception and in the restaurant. The rooms were very clean, comfortable and well equipped. We were particularly grateful for the aircon! The food was brilliant, a good selection and extremely well presented. I was impressed by the quality of the produce. I will be definitely return this time for longer so I can visit some of the local attractions

Room Tip: We stayed on first floor next to car park no noise room was very pleasant

Thank you for your review of Beales Hotel.

I am glad we looked after you so well.

Some of the local attractions that you might think about for your next visit include Hatfield House, Knebworth House, St Albans, Warner Bros Studio tour, Butterfly World, Paradise Park.....the list is endless, and all in a part of the UK (like your home town of Northampton) which isn't known for tourism compared say to Stratford on Avon, or the Lake District.

Come again soon, it would be great to welcome you back again !

We stayed here for only one night as we were going to the battle of the proms at Hatfield House. Hatfield House has another customer next year thanks to Beales. What a chilled out place and so very different from the big chains. My husband and I have stayed in quite a few hotels and there always seems to be something missing. How many times have we wished that our hotel room would have an ironing board! You get one at Beales. It makes a difference and that's what this hotel offers, a difference from the norm. We had lunch twice in the restaurant and we were pleased with the food on both occasions. How they do what they do on the room charge and restaurant prices I will never know. My mother also came with us and kept saying that the hotel should be 5* and what would the hotel have to do to achieve this. Well we couldn't answer her I'm afraid. Bloomin excellent!

Thank you for your kind review of Beales Hotel.

I am so glad that you enjoyed your stay at the hotel while visiting Hatfield House for the Battle Proms and that you enjoyed some of the nice touches that make us stand above the very run of the mill competition in the area.

All the 130 works of art throughout the hotel are original and come from the students and staff of the fine art department of the University of Hertfordshire which adjoins the hotel.

And we as a family firm have been around for 9 generations and 243 years, so hopefully we know a thing or two about customer care, (although we wouldn't boast that we always get it right...).

I doubt that we will ever be 5 star at Beales Hotel - to achieve that status, you have to employ chefs on standby all night long to cook a full meal at 4 in the morning if a guest wants. With just 53 bedrooms, that would not be feasible.

Better to under promise and over deliver than the other way round - this has always been our ethos.

Do come again next year when Hatfield House hosts the Battle Proms again !

With kindest regards,

Andrew Beale

We booked a short break for my wife's 50th birthday, taking our two children (18 and 12).

The deal we got was for two nights bed and breakfast, with a three course meal on the first night.

The staff are superb, right from the Management, receptionist through to the cleaning staff.

The hotel is very modern by design, exceptionally clean and light. The two rooms booked were spacious and welcoming. Lovely comfortable beds with Egyptian cotton sheets, bath with a powerful shower over (best I have experienced in a hotel), air conditioning, tea/coffee facilities - and small bottles of wine on arrival.

Part of the deal was the three course meal in the restaurant. Really excellent food, and even my fussy children enjoyed it.

All in all, a great stay.

Room Tip: The first floor room was better than the ground floor one.. but marginally.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of Beales Hotel on Tripadvisor.

I was particularly pleased that your children enjoyed the food in Outsidein Restaurant.

We don't set out to particularly be a family hotel (whatever that is), and over the course of each year I don't think we have huge numbers of children staying with us - they tend to gravitate with their parents more towards Premier Inns and Travelodges (as indeed do I when going away with 5 children !).

However as your children are 18 and 12, they are of an age where you can take them to a more grown up hotel and away from the bunfights at the budget hotel buffets !

It is good to know we looked after you and your family so well and were able to cater for the different age groups.

Do come again on the next family anniversary !

We have just returned from an excellent stay at your hotel.

The hotel service/standard/staff/food were all impressive. Attentive staff.

We stayed at your hotel as we were attending an event in St.Albans.....I recommended your hotel to many of the people attending the event, if they ever needed a good hotel in the area as my husband & I were so pleased with the ambiance of the hotel.

We stay away a lot in hotels & will definitely be returning to yours.

Thank you for taking the trouble to recommend Beales Hotel on Tripadvisor and equally for taking the trouble to recommend the hotel to family and friends.

I am glad that we were able to look after you so well, and that as experienced hotel visitors you were able to appreciate some of the touches that I hope make us different to the mainstream.

I wanted above all to have a bit of personality in what is still a very modern hotel, which is why each bedroom is named after the original work of art within the room, and why there are over 130 modern works of art dotted around the hotel.

Do come again when you are next down this way from Yorkshire !

We had a lovely stay using our Travel Zoo voucher. Very warm, efficient welcome. Lovely contemporary room - clean - and two mini bottles of complimentary wine!! Our bathroom only had towels for one - a quick call to reception and this was immediately rectified. Having spent a busy day shopping in St. Alban's, we were looking forward to relaxing in the bar with a couple of pre dinner drinks! Sadly this was not the case! Opposite the bar was a function room - filled with very loud disco music and lots of youngsters running in and out buying drinks. They were all well behaved - but as for a pleasant evening relaxing in the bar - forget it! We asked if we could move our table reservation forward and thankfully were shown straight to our table. The restaurant was great and service very good considering how busy they were. We had a wonderful 3 course meal - delicious chicken caesar salad, I had duo of lamb and my husband had the belly of pork - we shared a fab chocolate fondant and cheese and biscuits - fautless!
Our bed was so comfortable - had a good nights sleep and probably one of the tastiest breakfasts the next morning! So would recommend this hotel for a one night stay - but just don't be disappointed if you want a quite drink at the bar!

Room Tip: We had a ground floor room, but 1st floor would have been preferable!

Thank you for taking the time to write about Beales Hotel after your stay with Travelzoo.

I am glad that we looked after you so well but sorry of course that the young guests in the function impeded your quiet enjoyment of the bar.

There is a quiet lounge area in what we call the Bishops Gallery on the first floor overlooking the reception area, and we are always happy to serve drinks here away from the ground floor busyness.

Do come again, I am sure we will be working with Travelzoo again before long !
