“Nice room and friendly staff”

On business trip I stayed here for two nights, was upgraded to executive room 2544.
Bed comfortable, very quiet location tucked away at the back of the hotel.
Served at reception by a very friendly polish gentleman,I had room service the first night served by friendly staff and the food was tasty.
Clean Room and very nice breakfast on both days
All in all an enjoyable stay

I've commented previously that the Ramada (aka the Comet) was in decline. I have no choice in where I stay which is why I keep going back. However, on my last visit in late January 2009, the standard of the staff seemed to be much improved. This comment applies to the front-desk staff as well as the restaurant staff. I hope that this indicates that the Ramada has turned the corner - at its best it can be a quiet, comfy hotel with reasonable food at relatively economical prices.

I would have liked to have given this hotel 4 stars, but the couple of things which were 'wrong' were quite major things really.
The hotel itself, in an 'art deco' theme, is looking a little tired, but otherwise well looked after.

The good:
I stayed for 3 nights for a business trip, so location wasn't really an issue, as I had a car, but is conveniently located just off the A1M, just 5 minutes or so from the junction with the M25. The staff in the hotel were very friendly and helpful, and had good local knowledge, pointing me in the direction of various local amenities that I would otherwise not have found. The room was spacious, and the bed very comfortable.

The Bad:
Although the room itself was very clean, the bathroom - and in particular the shower, looked like it could have done with a 'deeper' clean. The shower head for example was very lime scaly, and just didn't feel clean.
Lack of free internet - I know most mid-range hotels don't offer free internet, but wish they would, as when you're on business, it's a key resource. Internet is available, but is fairly pricey.
However, my biggest grudge was the noise! Not from the hotel itself, but from the traffic on the major roads / roundabout in front of the hotel. I lost a lot of sleep due to cars with excessively load music systems and exhausts. So I would strongly recommend asking for a rear facing room!

Overall, a good base if you are doing business in the area, but ask for that rear-facing room!

I had to stay in this hotel again with work in January and was again disappointed.
This time the room was bigger but the standards are appalling. The room wasn't clean, with marks on pictures, the mirror, the toilet, the carpets etc. I presume it was an executive room due to the size but it was terrible.
TV was rubbish also.
The bed was really uncomfortable as it was two linked together. The duvet, pillows etc were all cheap and not nice.
Breakfast was also average and certainly not good value.
If you do have to go to Hatfield book in advance and stay at the Beales. It's 100times better but not much more expensive (around £10).

Lovely decor, helpful and pleasant staff

Sprinkler head in my room covered by a plastic bag - receptionist advised this was because the sprinkler was broken

I was on the 1st floor - noisy/rowdy guests in another part of the hotel

Fire alarm started ringing around 1pm and continued intermittently through the night. Still ringing when I checked out at 8.30am - I asked receptionist why - she said drunken guest had broken alarm glass and activated. Manager standing nearby heard my conversation - no apology /explanation I ordered breakfast in my room between 7.30 and 8 am it didn't arrive. No answer from room service - I phoned reception - they investigated said no card on door - breakfast arrived at 8.25 am -standard as they didn't receive my order. I had to leave at 8.30.

On the plus side - room service at night was very prompt and food was delicious but I wouldn't stay at this hotel again and wouldn't recommend it to anyone - particularly for a business trip. On my return I told a colleague who had stayed there the week before and he said he was disturbedby drunken noisy guests as well
