“Warming, welcoming and great value!”
Reviewed June 14, 2013

There are plenty of places to eat well in the area, but few perform to the standard of the candlestick. The very top end of Pub/Restaurant, with a superb selection at reasonable cost.
Good value all round and always a couple of good beers to tickle the palate too!

“OK food in a lovely location”
Reviewed June 13, 2013

Went for Sunday lunch on way to a concert at Hatfield house after seeing top reviews on Tripadvisor. The beer was good as was the cheerful and efficient service but the food was just ordinary pub fair. There was no finesse, veg not served separately and not even asked if you wanted gravy- it came already poured. The best thing is the setting with nice views and plenty of outside space with tables.

“Perfectly pleasant but not worth travelling for”
Reviewed June 11, 2013

I drove out here from London with my girlfriend for Sunday lunch in June 2013. We found a very pleasant pub set in attractive countryside. However, I'm not sure why it is raved about on Trip Advisor - the food is the standard stuff you'd find in most pubs these days. My mixed roast was tasty but not particularly satisfying. We weren't drinking alcohol as I was driving and we found the prices of soft drinks a bit steep too (£1.75 for a lime & soda!).

Note: If your car doesn't have much ground clearance, the access to the pub is a bit of a nightmare, as the roads aren't great and you will ground out the nose and undertray.

“Hidden treasure”

Great find via trip advisor. A real hidden gem. Polite attentive service. Good selection of dishes but not overwhelming. Reasonable prices for quality of food.

“Possibly as remote as Hertfordshire gets”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

This is a very nice pub indeed - set by itself with nothing else around, about a mile from the village of Essendon. If approaching along West End Lane, as we did, beware the giant potholes. Not an especially pretty building from the outside, though in a lovely setting, but very nicely done out inside. Plenty of car parking, and masses of tables on the grass outside. There's even a hitching post for your horse - should you have brought one.
When we called in for lunch they had two real ales on, both quite rare: Buntingford's Highwayman and (new to me) Red Riot from the Elephant School Brewing Company.
Several of the more interesting dishes on their on-line menu weren't being offered - it was a Bank Holiday Monday so perhaps they had run out over the weekend. The chosen starter was a little disappointing: while the marinated olives were excellent, the dipping oil was rather meagre in quantity, and the bread not very good. Again, possibly a 'by the time we got to BH Monday' issue with that bread...
Although not late in the lunchtime session there was only one of the pan fried gurnard left; so gallantly leaving that to my partner I went for the fish pie - which was delicious. Vegetables are always a benchmark for me, loathing them overcooked. These were all beautifully crisp, even the cauliflower which is notoriously easy to mess up.
All in all, really liked this pub; and so, more importantly, did Mrs P. We will be visiting again.
