We had a 2 night stay for my Birthday weekend. We had the four poster suite (room 7) which is positioned at the front of the hotel over the front door. It was great to sit in the small alcove and watch cattle and ponies walking along the main road, it was also entertaining to look at the irate faces of the drivers stuck behind them! The restaurant was fantastic. We had the 7 course taster menu and the combination of the ingredients and courses was fantastic. The portions were surprisingly larger than expected for taster dishes. The hotel staff were superb, front of house, bar, restaurant. They were 5 star professionals with friendly banter. We felt like invited friends rather than hotel guests.

Room Tip: Room 7 was good. Separate living room, plenty of different types of chairs, comfy 4 poster bed. Good...

We arrived for lunch after a fraught journey, and we were tired. A man pushed in front of me at the bar but the lady served me without making a big deal of it, which was really nice as I don't do friction. We ate an excellent lunch in the restaurant area and added extra portions and another pudding with no problem. We then asked whether they knew where our bed and breakfast was and it was looked up on google and a map provided - service!!

We've visited the Montagu Arms on a number of occasions in the past and have logged reviews before. Am reviewing again as our latest 2 visits were exceptional.
On 29th August we stayed overnight for my birthday and from check in to when we left after lunch on the day after the staff were so attentive and the service was amazing.
A lovely surprise on check in as we had been upgraded to a beautiful 4 poster suite at the front of the hotel, later a bottle of champagne arrived which made the day really special.
We had a full afternoon tea and the food was amazing, as always, it's such a lovely treat to have the first cuppa poured by a member of staff. Cannot recommend highly enough, try it, it's yummy.
After the tea we sat in the comfy lounge drinking a nice bottle of wine for a couple of hours. It was quiet in the hotel that evening, the restaurant was closed so most guests had gone out for dinner, this meant we had the place to ourselves which was a real treat too. Later we felt a bit peckish and despite the kitchen being closed the assistant manager organised some chips for us, much appreciated too.
After a wonderful nights sleep we were greeted in the morning by one of the staff bringing us freshly made tea to our room - a service offered to all guests each morning. This started the day off well which continued with a very filling and tasty breakfast in the restaurant. Make sure you try the breakfast, some great choices and as always the staff are attentive yet not obtrusive in any way.
We had decided to have lunch in the hotel on the Friday so after checking out and putting our bag in the car we returned to the lounge and were provided with a nice pot of tea and the daily papers to while away the time, very relaxing. So nice to just sit and enjoy the tranquility of the hotel. Also the lounge looks out onto the courtyard garden of the hotel which is always very well maintained and full of flowers to admire. It's also a lovely place to sit and eat/drink when the weather allows.
Our lunch was superb, our compliments to the chef and his staff. The hotel has one michelin star which has just been reconfirmed for another year. It is well deserved. Wonderful quality, great tastes. Be willing to try new things, you won't be disappointed. Plus the hotel has a new restaurant manager, Pierre, who is always very welcoming and his staff are a credit to him and the hotel.
Another thing to mention. If you are coeliac sufferer please try this hotel as they cater superbly for this. Mum suffers from coeliac disease and the kitchen at the Montagu Arms are amazing producing some wonderful things for her to try. The afternoon tea they provided for us in September was exceptional. Mum had her own sandwiches and beautifully made delicate cakes. When it came to the scones Mums hadn't turned out well so the staff were not willing to serve them substandard and told us they wouldn't be charging for Mums tea because of this. An amazing offer. Then a bowl of fruit and sorbet arrived to make up for the missing scones. . Mum was made to feel really special which was appreciated. Plus we were offered a glass of champagne. All in all a superb day.
We have already booked another visit in December for a birthday treat for my husband and also another lunch in October.
Do we like this hotel? Absolutely. Do we recommend this hotel and restaurant, very definitely, we already have done to friends and family. The hotels attention to detail and to the customers experience is excellent.
Try it yourselves for a meal or an overnight stay, you won't be disappointed. If you like a relaxing friendly environment you won't find any better in the New Forest.

I'm an antique British car freak from the US, so we have been to Beaulieu many times to Lord Montagu's museum. We have admired the Montagu Arms Hotel from the outside each time, but were never there at the right time of day. This trip, we drove by the hotel at 6:30 PM and decided to stay. I can say it is a truly elegant boutique hotel throughout and the gardens in the back are lovely, especially the walk through the verdant lushness to the car park. The food was marvelous, the breakfast being one of the best we had on our 35 night trip. The small staff is very professional, and the young receptionist impressed me as being on a fast track to hotel management. The only drawback is the price - it's rather expensive, but we felt privileged to be indulging ourselves there for at least one night.

We took another couple as a thank you and retirement present. We were all very impressed with the surroundings, the hotel, rooms, staff, dining, absolutely everything. I know we will be going back there before too long. Excellent.

I have never before ticked ALL the boxes on an hotel review form with "Exceeded Expectations".

The Montague Arms staff were first class. Nothing was too much trouble but at no time was the attention of any member of staff "over the top".

The accommodation was superb and the food delicious and beautifully presented.

A very friendly hotel with lovely garden areas. Not cheap but well worth the money.

Visited the hotel for a family sunday lunch and were looked after from the minute we arrived with the offer of aperitifs in the lounge before dining. We went straight through and sat down to a fabulous 3 course Sunday lunch. We were looked after by "Norbert" who tended to our every need with a smile even producing a small table for the ladies to put our handbags on so they were the same height whilst seated-a lovely touch. The Sommelier gave some good recommendations and we particularly enjoyed the red with the roast beef! The food was excellent and we were all full of praise for the chef and his team. It was a lovely sunny afternoon and so all the glass doors were opened out overlooking the terrace gardens with birds singing and lovely views. Relaxed on the sofas in the lounge afterwards for coffee and petit fours and at some point the staff had picked up on our celebration and the petit fours had a personalised message piped in chocolate. Now that's service. Great time had by all.
