Drove straight from Hertfordshire to the hotel arriving at 8am on Sunday morning. Turning into the hotel I was disappointed with the first impression, the grubby appearance of the buildings and grounds. Entering the building, I was warmly welcomed into the hotel by the receptionist and offered a hot drink. I was not due to check in until 2pm but had arrived early for a walk with my dog and would be waiting for the Tour Guide to arrive. I checked in later at around 3pm and was shown my room. The best rooms are those away from the back of the hotel whereby the railway line passes and away from the hot swimming pool. The room was standard if not dated but the power shower was magical. I had booked in for dinner, bed and breakfast. The food is awful. The ingredients are cheap, boiled frozen veg with your luke-warm dinner. I sent it back and the same dinner arrived again but this time hard as a rock and microwaved. There is no need for a chef when frozen veg is being served to paying customers. The menu was the same all week with only the specials changing daily. The choices are limited and the plastic breakfast food heated up , there is no wow with their food more of a yuk. I asked if I could eat the breakfast and dinner at the Drift Inn next door but this would not be possible. The food in the bar next door is fabulous and the range of freshly cooked produce is evident by a packed out restaurant throughout the day. Dogs are allowed in both restaurants. I was not surprised to hear that returning guests book on a room only basis. Noise within the hotel was an issue. I was woken up before 6am by the slamming of the corridor fire doors. The noise issue surrounds the slamming of fire doors in the corridor, drunks, passing trains on the main line behind the hotel and the creaking of floorboards and the banging on the radiator in the early hours. Armed with my earplugs and ear muffs I was able to manage some of the wakening sounds. The issue of squeaky floorboards and doors should have been addressed. The dog was well catered for and the stay overall was good but the niggles need to be addressed.
