What a lovely place to walk - so vast and peaceful. If you are hiring a bike though, make sure you let the hirer know if you are a novice cyclist. I really couldn't cope with the amount of hills on the route we chose, and the guy who hired the bikes, whist being a very nice chap, didn't bother to find out what our cycling abilities were.

In view of the past 2 days experience with the very cold weather we could not venture out of the car for very long (due to the cold freezing air) - but found viewing from the car interesting by seeing the New Forest Ponies walking around. We even came across a group of young deer crossing in front of the car. If the weather had been better we would have seen more!!

Ok so maybe I am biased as I have lived here all my life, but what a beautiful part of the country. The forest itself is stunning with plenty of free car parks. Not much in the way of facilities such as public conveniences. A great place to explore with a picnic on a niceday, but please take your litter home with you. New Forest ponies, deer and other animals will be regularly found wandering across roads, the 40mph speed limit is there for a very good reason.

We have been meeting up somewhere in the New Forest for quite a few years now and never tire of its beauty and serenity. Normally we go in the winter to early spring months which means being able to take advantage of several hotel offers as well as having lots of space in this quiet part of the year. The onset of spring really shows well in the vegetation and there are some year round attractions like the Motor Museum at Beaulieu and the Saturday market in Lymington. Lymington and Lyndhurst are probably the nicest towns and you can access the Isle of Wight from the fomer quite easily. Burley is a nice village with a super tea-room and there are endless trails and walks for all ages. There are plenty of hotels in and around the Forest and year round public conveniences in some picnic spots which are always useful.
