“Nice Getaway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2014

We stayed at The Crown Manor House in Lyndhurst as a Christmas present to each other and it made a lovely get away for a couple of nights after the rush of the previous few days. The room was a really good size with a 4 poster bed and although it still retained that "old" look and feel, it had all mod cons and a superb ensuite, with a good sized and pressure shower, all very clean and even a soft close loo seat! (love them and they should be in all hotels/b&b) We got our dates mixed up and turned up a day early! but they hotel accomodaded us all the same without any fuss and as it was our mistake we were OK with the extra £40 we had to pay. I do feel the rooms are a little heafty on the price structure, but then it is a very touristy area and this was a treat. The evening meal was very modern and had some great tastes and visuals going on, but with there only being 5 main courses and desserts, it was poor that they had run out of steaks and the chocolate fondant by 9.00! Breakfast was a very good hot and cold anything you could wish for, affair and the staff were all very attentive. We did a local walk around the moor land which was suposed to take 1 3/4 hours, but due to a difficult to understand map and water logged tracks that dissapeared often, it took us 3 1/4 hours, but we didn't mind. If you go at anything other than mid summer after a drought, you'll need wellies and leave plenty of time to get back to civilisation before dark, you wouldn't want to be out there by yourself at night! The pub almost across the road, was excellent for our second evening meal and a little cafe down at the end of the main street, Indulgence I think it was called, is definitely worth a look as the cakes and scones etc were amazing. It's a lovely area at any time I would imagine, but summer will be rammed for sure. The Crown Manor hotel also allowed dogs and well behaved children, which we did not mind and everywhere accepts muddy shoes and boots as part of winter. So to sum up: The Crown Manor is very good, worth a "punt" if a little pricey.

Room Tip: Room 212 was great and although on the road side, it was quiet, just be prepared for the bells of th...

Decided to take a couple of days break between Xmas and new year with my wife. Hadn't been to the New Forest for a couple of decades and so thought we would give it a go. Nice town of Lyndhurst but not much to do. A couple of nice restaurants (Thai) and a decent pub serving good ales and chilled white wine (Fox & Hounds) Cant comment on hotel food but, as they were full on the Friday night, I guess it can't be bad.

Hotel in nice and warm with a xmassy feel about the place, Big stag in the reception decorated with fake snow really stood out and the Xmas tree was impressive.

Room a tad smaller than we would have liked and little things like no soap in the bathroom was very strange. Instead you had bottles of soap secured to the wall over the bath that you had to use to squirt soap onto your hand and then walk to the sink a few feet away!

Bed comfy enough but I am yet to find any hotel that can replicate the quality of pillow you find in Hilton Hotels. Windows are mouldy and frames starting to rot but as this is a very large hotel, refurbishment on this scale would cost a fortune.

Hotel is in a great location for exploring all of the new forest and further afield to Bournemouth and Poole.

Dear TonyBay,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review, as all feebdack is greatly valued.

I am pleased that you found our location great for exploring the local area, and that you enjoyed the festive atmosphere.

The hotel has just undergone a major re-furbishment, which has seen many of the window frames replaced, however, I hope you can appreciate that due to the age of the building, permission has to be obtained before some alterations can be made. I appreciate your comments regarding the cleanliness of the frame and the lack of soap for hand washing, both of which have been rectified.

I look forward to welcoming you back on a future occasion.

My parents and I returned to the Crown at Lyndhurst this Christmas because we enjoyed last year’s trip even if the staff were a bit like a carry on film.

Both my parents had been very ill Mum having a big operation & Dad going to have a serious op in January. So I wanted it to be a really nice special break. We don’t know what’s round the corner.

First our rooms were smaller than last year but yes more expensive. My room just had a few small windows high up, it resembled a prison cell. The heating didn’t work properly. My parents had very little room around the bed so it was a challenge to move around.

The food wasn’t as good as last year. Breakfast on the first morning was a disgrace, no buffet, no boiled or poached eggs. When the food finally turned up it was cold. The Xmas lunch turned up looking very tired and grey. Not a patch on last year. I observed the beverage manager having a few glasses of wine behind the bar in secret. There was also a problem in the kitchen with the air vents.

In fact one of the big problems was the lack of staff; it took forever to get served at the bar, at the table or for a coffee after dinner. The one bar man had limited English. I ordered a pineapple juice for a fellow guest a received a pint of apple juice. Saving on staff looks bad and is not the way to run a hotel. The fire alarm kept going off and the piercing noise scarred many of the guests. But the staff thought it was funny.

Now to what was billed the “Boxing Day Gala Dinner”. We were told that we would have the same table for all the main meals. Instead the beverage manger put us in the far corner blocking the fire exit where it was freezing cold. This was not good for my parents so I had to turn the radiator on next to me and then the long wait to be served. Over 20 minutes before a menu or a bread roll which we had to ask for. We were so far away from the main heart of the room it felt like we were living on the Falkland Islands.

The whole meal was dreadful with the same boring limited menu that we have had since day one. Then for the entertainment “ the vocal delights of Ricky Arthur’s singing as Michael Buble. “ was how it was sold to everyone. If my parents and I were X-factor judges then he would have had three XXX after the first bar. We got up and left as did many other guests. Talking to most of the guest they thought it was awful. The Manager couldn’t even be bothered to work that night that sums up the whole stay for us.

The final morning saw the hotel water supply stop and we were all glad to leave. The Manager admitted to me about the poor entertainment and always seemed too relaxed and fair weather to run a hotel. I won’t be returning to the Crown again. It seemed all about making money this year than any service or duty of care to the guest, some of which are elderly. Then the final insult came from the rude un-educated women on the front desk. If she was in the KGB then I’m sure she would have been thrown out for cruelty. Back to school for her me thinks.

Dear Jonathan S,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review.

I was extremely dissapointed to read your comments, as feedback received so far has been extremely positive, with many guests already booking again for 2014.

The hotel has been re-furbished since your last visit, and upon checking your reservation it appears that a different room category was reserved in 2012, which would explain the difference in size, and this would have been reflected in the room rate.

I have passed on your valued comments regarding the food provision to the Head Chef. A full breakfast buffet was available on all mornings, and I would like to confirm that both poached and boiled eggs are cooked to order, and can be requested from a member of the restaurant team.

With regard to the Boxing Day Dinner, I hope you can appreciate that everyone's taste in music varies, and I am sorry that it did not meet your expectations.

I would like to assure you that all members of the team are trained to deliver a high standard of customer care, and had you have raised any of these issues with them during your stay, every endeavour would have been made to rectify your concerns.

I understand that the General Manager who was on duty throughout the Christmas period, had reason to speak to you during your stay, regarding our smoking policy, and he is surprised that these issues were not raised during this conversation, but only following the recent e-mail that was sent to you relating to room recovery.

I hope that despite your comments you will choose to stay with us on a future occasion, so that your faith in the hotel can be restored.

We have just spent our Christmas here, we were a party of 8 , all pensioners, and booked the 3 day Christmas break as a package! the hotel staff were very friendly and welcoming from the start and went out of the way to make our stay good. The hotel had just been refurbished to a very high standard and the rooms were clean and very comfortable. A good selection of teas and coffee with biscuits in the room, big fluffy towels, and a great two way shower. Our room was the standard and was a good size. The couples with a superior room had lots more space. There are plenty of public rooms to find a corner in, a large bar,a library TV room with comfy chairs and log fire, sitting room with log fire and games room set up for our stay with skittles, table tennis and other games. The service was excellent, with buffet breakfast and main meals in the dining room, afternoon tea
served wherever we were seated. The food was of a good standard and quality using local produce although we would have liked more vegetables! We had a small problem with a strange humming noise on our first night which the hotel manager promptly cured for us (never did find out what it was) . We were very impressed. It was great value for money and we would certainly hope to return and would recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in the heart of a the lovely village of Lyndhurst in the beautiful New Forest.

Room Tip: The hotel is on a main road so the rear rooms are quieter but all 4 rooms taken by our group were ve...

Just returned from a Christmas break at the Crown Manor Hotel in Lyndhurst. The Hotel is very rustic and has just benefitted from a refit - it is lovely-nice room, unfortunately the bed was very uncomfortable and lumpy. The public area's are well thought out and relatively comfortable. The staff were outstanding, they couldn't do enough for us, they were so attentive, none were frightened to get their hands dirty. That said the festive feel of the place just wasn't there. The food was fantastic beautifully presented and tasted wonderful. Unfortunately it was not thought out properly. We were assured that there would be two vegetarian choices on the main menu for Christmas dinner-there was one!! A vegetarian option is not a choice, for a vegetarian it's called hobson's choice which means take it or leave it!! I enjoy Italian food but it was not something I wanted for my main Christmas meal. I ended up with a small flan accompanied by four very undercooked brussel sprouts and a few undercooked baton carrots-no potatoes of any kind. The portion size of all the meals were minute. This is the first Christmas in my life that I have got up from the table feeling hungry!! What was missing from the festive feast was vegetables-what is with chefs that they don't think that vegetarians want to eat plain vegetables!!
We enjoyed ourselves despite the lack of food atmosphere and comfy bed, but wont be repeating the experience.

Room Tip: Don't choose a four poster bed

Before you book this hotel: check if there are any party's whitin the building during your stay. I can assure you: if there are you won't close an eye! Reception says sorry afterwards (of course they know the problem!) but that doesn't really help, does it?

I booked one of the booking sites and got a deal better than I would have at one of the plastic corporate hotels. Lovely hotel full of character, nice room, comfortable bed and very nice bathroom - all obviously recently updated. Relaxed breakfast was good. The town is lovely and I enjoyed my short stay.
