“Oh Joy - it hasn't changed”

A visit to this pub is always a certainty when we are staying in the New Forest. It is now hard to believe that at one time this must have been the only pub in the area not to serve food. The food is delicious, locally sourced, very well presented and reasonably priced. We have had lunch here so many times over recent years and the standard and quality of the food has not altered. They know they are on a winner and observe the maxim 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. It is a joy to come here. Long may they continue.
PS. I am reliably informed that the cask ales are excellent.

“A pub as it should be”
Reviewed August 30, 2013

What a lovely pub! Set at the end of a secluded road and in the New Forest this pub has a very short but delicious menu. We tried the home made pork pie (the best my 16 year old daughter said she had ever eaten), the quiche (nice chunks of bacon) and the dressed crab from Lymington. (Perfect). All the food is locally sourced - no chips or burgers - and the garden is spacious. Just be aware that they don't take cards; it's cash only.

“Sunday Lunch”
Reviewed August 25, 2013

Met friends here for lunch, and had a lovely meal. Only cold food - (a wide selection of ploughman's, pork pies, sausage, quiche etc), and a good selection of beers. My pork pie was excellent, and the quiche, and the sausage were also highly recommended. Only a small place, but plenty of room outside, so arrive early if you want to sit inside. Real traditional country pub, with traditional pub grub. Great!

“Real country pub”
Reviewed August 14, 2013

Proper old fashioned country pub, in the heart of the New Forest. Went there for lunch, and even though they were fairly busy (in the school holidays), drink and food service both incredibly fast. I had the trout pâté, served with granary bread - really lovely, perfect fresh bread, tasty pâté served in a little tea cup. My dining companion had the home made pork pie with their own ale chutney. The pie was clearly home made, of really good quality, full of meat rather than any air pockets or jelly as you'd get in shop bought. I've been coming here for years, would recommend it highly, particularly now they've got an ice cream hut in the garden!!

“Proper little pub with wide selection of ales and beers, lovely lunches and beautiful setting”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

Absolutely perfect place for a watering hole half way along a long walk or bike ride (or horse ride - they have a small corral also). The lunches are fantastic - proper ploughman's, pork pies, crab salad and the like - all cold, but all tasty, well prepared and using what seemed to be top quality ingredients. Service was quick too. More real ales on offer in racks behind the bar than I've seen outside a beer festival. The pub itself is tiny, remote and invariably packed on a nice day, with a large garden with loads of tables. Good job we had a long walk back afterwards across the forest...
