I live nearby and have never been into this pub before but decided to give it a try at lunchtime a few weeks ago. It has been under new management for about six weeks. My first impression of the bar is that it is a bit lacklustre. It needs to be made more welcoming.
We ordered pate and toast with onion marmalade. We got a good size portion of pate but had to ask for more bread because there just was not enough. This was provided without a problem. The beer was fine and my wine was chilled. I was a bit concerned that the waitress was patting visiting dogs and giving them treats and then served our food. I hope she washed her hands first!
We have so many good pubs in the New Forest that pub staff have to go out of their way to make you feel welcome.
It was okay but I will drive past and will be in no great rush to eat there again.
It may be that the new owners are still sorting out the pub and I'm sure holidaymakers will love the fact that dogs are allowed. It is a very old pub inside but they just need to improve the décor and atmosphere. The food on other tables looked good with decent portions and well cooked.
