“Great discovery”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

When you are celebrating 30 years together, you hope the restaurant you choose comes up to expectations. Well, Clos du Maquis did just that. The Maitre'd was enthusiastic and friendly, but not intrusive. Service was good. Food and wine were excellent, and not over-priced. It was also nicely busy but not noisy. Definitely one to recommend. I gave four stars rather than five, simply because I always believe there must be room for improvement.

“Superb”
Reviewed August 3, 2013 via mobile

Truly excellent food - all 3 courses. A warm welcome on arrival and helpful advice from the boss. Fresh, delicious bread. Excellent choice from the fixed price menu. Good selection of wines. This place clearly has a great chef and uses high quality ingredients.

“Consistently Good”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

Have been here many times

On this occasion came here as a couple
Had a three course meal with wine and coffee - everything excellent

Worth mentioning that this was an offer, they had on at the time we visited and that unlike most restaurants when they put up an offer, it is just that and not an inferior menu in any way

Highly recommended

“A jewel in Hampshire's culinary crown”
Reviewed June 16, 2013

We visited this wonderful little restaurant for Sunday lunch on a dreary, showery summer's day, and spent two hours being wonderfully wined and dined. Our South African host seemed a little dour at first, but was impeccable in dress and style, and quickly mellowed into quite a character.
We sat in the little bar area and enjoyed a glass of champagne and delicious amuse bouche whilst perusing the menu. We mixed our choices from the set menu and a la carte, had a wonderful glass of Viognier with our starters, then an excellent bottle of Bordeaux with the cote be boeuf. Just fabulous! We left our host to choose our cheeseboard, and again, he was spot on, then we finished with excellent desserts and coffee. What a truly delicious experience.
We will be shrieking the name of this place from the rooftops and can't understand how neither the Good Food Guide nor the Michelin people have found this gem yet!!

“More than a brasserie, less than fine dining”
Reviewed June 7, 2013

I had driven past many times on my daily commute to work and often wondered what it would be like to eat there. When the opportunity arose, we went along not quite sure what to expect. We were greeted by the maitre d' who managed to be both obsequious and condescending at the same time. Once we had our aperitifs, a deferential waitress brought a small selection of amuse bouches to accompany them, so my expectations were set for fine dining. We had ordered from the set menu and when the starters appeared my expectations were met. Presentation was beautiful and the food delicious. Indeed the main courses were also delicious, but fine dining they were not. The duck casserole was served in individual casserole pots for the diner (or waiter) to spoon out onto an empty plate. Vegetables, small cubes of dark orange carrot & trimmed dark green beans, and potatoes were also served separately. The lamb was served on a pile of the same small cubes of dark orange carrot & trimmed dark green beans.
I'm still not quite sure what to make of this place. The food was delicious, but I came away feeling that it was neither one thing nor the other. It falls short of fine dining, but lacks the bustle and atmosphere of a brasserie. It was perfectly acceptable, but I feel no desire to return.
