It was 20 years since we'd visited this restaurant. What we'd missed!! Fantastic food from all the Chinese regions at sensible prices, and such a kind and helpful staff. Portions were larger than we expected but what we couldn't manage was packed into little boxes ro put in the freezer when we got home. It won't be 20 years before we visit this lovely restaurant again.

We visited the Mandarin Chef again in May of this year. This ends up being a twice yearly occasion (or sometimes more depending). No where we have been can beat the all you can eat buffet which is served Sunday to Thursday evenings. For £16.95 (ish) you have prawn crackers, then as many starters as you wish, then crispy duck pancakes, then main with as many dishes as you wish. Good value for money. Favourites are smoked chicken (never had it that good any where else), prawn toast, spring rolls, satay chicken and seaweed for starters. Comes out quickly and always with a smile. Drinks are quite expensive though!!
Will return!

Had a really good meal tonight in the mandarin. The buffet had a really good selection and duck was fantastic. Very amusing waiters,

This was a birthday meal trip out so selected the The Mandarin Chef in Romsey. I haven't been here in 10 years and heard it changed hands in management but that didn't sway me. We all sat down thinking one thing and one thing only...the buffet! The starters were very good but seemed to dip in quality for the main courses. Example was the Ribs (bones) which seem to break very easily ... microwave? I hate to think. We were told by the manager quite randomly after we had finished our meal that; next time if we didn't finish a selected main dish from the 'a la carte' menu we would be charged. This was quite surprising as we didn't even like the dish (King prawn in sweet and sour sauce (battered prawn - was horrible) so we left it due to the quality of the food. But I still think its rude to state that after you've eaten and full!. You may feel differently!

So overall disappointed as it came to a large bill for a meal which wasn't worth the money spent. Staff were excellent and welcoming but the manager let it down overall.
