“Lovely unspoilt pub”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2014

We came here on 1 March 2014. We had dinner in the restaurant at the back of the pub, and were unfortunately given a table right next to the party table which is on raise platform - unfortunate because they were very noisy and we were right below them. Luckily the few loud ones didn't talk with their mouths full so it was a bit quieter after their food was served. My buffalo tomatoes and mozzarella, basil pie was lovely, but my partners chicken and ham pie was low on meet, and the pastry top was a solid brown disk of something too hard to cut. Otherwise very good. Beer is superb and one of the main feature of this pub that make it so famous.
We didn't experience any of the unpleasant staff mentioned in the earlier reviews, so perhaps that have all gone now. Our waitress was perfect.

“Welcome pub on dark wet night”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2014 via mobile

This pub is in a remote spot in the country. It harks back to probably how most travellers inns and pubs used to be. There appeared to be none of the noisy, profit making modern entertainments that litter so many of our pubs nowadays. You can have a civil conversation without being interrupted by sports tv, jukeboxes, fruit machines, or a poke from the end of a pool cue. It was warm and cosy with candle lit tables and open fires. Fair selection of meals on offer from the menu. Good traditional choices for the meat eaters, but only a few for vegetarians. Unfortunately one of our choices was unavailable since a busy lunch time, but the staff were quick to ask the chef for alternative dishes beyond the menu. What we received was well presented and of good quality. Good selection of beers, ales and wines. Prices were reasonable and the staff were friendly and very down to earth. The pubs decor and furniture was interesting, hotch-potch, old but comfortable and welcoming. Lovely atmosphere for a cold wet night outside. Enjoyed! Shall return.

“Odd experience with the wine service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2014

We had a good meal in pleasant warm and cosy surroundings in this country pub. The food was served promptly and was very tasty.
The only problem was the serviced of the wine. The unopened bottle of Pinot Grigio in a cool bucket was placed on the table with a cheerful "here you go!" At first we could not work out if it was a cork or screw top. Once we had established it was a screw top we still could not open the bottle! We called over the waitress and asked if she could open the bottle but she said she had not got the muscles! She did eventually find someone to open the wine but we found it strange that the wine was not opened for us as a matter of course. We took this up with the manager/landlady who told us "we are not the sort of establishment who pours the wine for you" .Odd!

Phoebe A, Owner at The Pub With No Name AKA The White Horse, responded to this review, March 8, 2014
We have enlisted the help of a local 10yr old to help reply to this review as technology at The White Horse (Pub with no name) is quite a rarity.
The White Horse has been voted by The Good Pub Guide as “The unspoilt pub of the year 2014” and rated by The Daily Telegraph as one of the best five pubs in Britain. The pub, over the last twelve years of our time as custodians, has won countless awards, and hearts. However it is a particular place and not to everyone’s taste. As expectations are raised ever higher, we believe that a little piece of the old days should remain. It is with that in mind that you will find we are not a “restaurant with a bar” or to coin a phrase, a “Gastro Pub”. We are what it says on the cover - a country pub.
You will find that we do not book tables in the bars and we can’t always provide table service. We will certainly endeavour to, when we are not so busy (we are just a pub).
We have a great bunch of hunting, shooting and fishing locals, the odd dog wandering about, an eclectic mix of bric-a-brac, furniture and customers, all cobbled together in a pub six miles from the nearest town, in the heart of rural Hampshire.
We serve in the region of 30,000 meals a year. This is home cooked, homemade and as much as possible, locally sourced food. We genuinely try to make every experience as good as we can, but with the best will in the world, we may get some wrong, for that we apologise.
As we have become more popular over the years, we sometimes on the weekend can get a little over run. You will find this in all the great pubs in this fantastic country. In these times, please bear with us as we are just trying to do our best, as are all the other busy places.
The big problem when you mix all demographics in one smallish place, someone has to maintain a level of behaviour that is acceptable to all and that is not the lowest common denominator, as seems to be the norm these days, but something a little higher.
Unfortunately pubs can’t be all things to all men. As the saying sort of goes;
You can please some of the people all of the time,
All of the people some of the time,
Not all of the people, all of the time.
We will, nevertheless, try.
We all love this little pub dearly and hope that if you visit us again, you may just realise that.

“Good food, lovely setting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2014 via mobile

Was slightly apprehensive about visiting this pub having read all of the negative reviews that have been posted recently.

However, my partner and I could not have been more pleased. The food was lovely, we both had a burger. The staff were extremely welcoming (as were the locals) and it is a proper English pub - which is lacking these days.

Reasonably priced and will definitely go back to enjoy the ample space outside in the summer.
