Chewton Glen Hotel & Spa
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in New Milton
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 24, 2013

We recently spent a wonderfully relaxing 24 hours at Chewton Glen and came away feeling as though we had been away for days. Our room was beautiful and the bed and pillows really comfortable. The bathroom was in a class of its own with one of the best showers we've ever used.
The food and service in the restaurant was up to the standard that you would expect in a top class hotel- with the exception of the wine which was over priced and not as good as the price would have suggested.Service at breakfast was a little slow but perhaps that was only a problem because we had an appointment to keep.
It is worth visiting the hotel for the spa alone and we made full use of the facilities. Lunch in the spa is particularly tempting and looks healthy- although not if you are too tempted!
We have been regular visitors at the hotel for about 20 years and have seen good times and bad times. We have been disappointed on some occasions but would say that the quality of the food and accommodation is now in keeping with a hotel of this calibre. Another time we would choose a less expensive wine and would run less risk of disappointment!
I find it very difficult to understand the complaints which other reviewers have made about the hotel, especially regarding the staff who we have always found to be friendly and helpful. Perhaps we are just lucky but very rarely do we have a problem with hotel staff- if we are friendly then so are they.

The hotel is expensive, but if you want to feel special this is the place to go.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the croquet lawn have very good showers, but we have never stayed in a room wh...

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on your numerous experiences of staying at Chewton Glen over the past 20 years.

Your insight is much appreciated and gives readers a very balanced view of the hotel and spa. Although we strive for perfection, we can never say that we have reached our goal; things do occasionally go wrong but the team and I work hard in ensuring that we put the situation right and make improvements to address concerns raised by guests.

I am so pleased that the hard work we have put into improving the food offering in the past 2 years meets with your approval. That said, I know Oscar Malek, our Head Sommelier was saddened to read your comments on the wine quality and pricing. Oscar is a very open minded young man and if you could spare a moment to let him know your thoughts in greater detail he would be grateful to hear from you.

The team and I look forward to welcoming you back to Chewton Glen in the near future.

With best wishes,

Andrew Stembridge
Managing Director

The overall experience did not match the expectations of a 5* hotel by far. We stayed there several nights during an Oldtimer Rally of ca. 40 couples and unanimously agreed: service was slow and poor, staff with very few exceptions unfriendly, unmotivated, incompetent and at times bossy, while leadership was lacking completely. The cuisine was unvaried, the quality mediocre - a poor match given the exorbitant price levels. A mismatch of price - quality that also counts for the wine list. The checkout was a true disaster, most invoices were incorrect and the process lasted forever.

I was with my godmother who is disabled and specially requested a disabled room on the ground floor. Upon arrival it became evident that the disabled room had been allocated to someone else and the room we had was not adjusted for her needs. Really not a good start for an exclusive hotel ! Christine, the manager was helpful but it was unnecessarily stressful, especially as my godmother had had a long conversation with the receptionist about her mobility needs. Having said that there were some notable members of staff - Mark, Rudi and Tom who were very helpful in this situation. I feel that the booking form and procedures need to be more detailed in order to accommodate all kinds of guest.
Secondly, the restaurant served amazing food but the service was sometimes slow as there seemed to be fixed roles for the staff rather than on a needs basis. I spent 15 mins waiting for a glass of sparkling water which almost went to the wrong table !
Overall, I felt that this was a more corporate hotel than I had hoped and sometimes it seemed like we weren't their target customer, so perhaps we should try somewhere different next time.

Afternoon Tea. Having heard so much about this hotel we were really looking forward to enjoying our afternoon tea. The actual afternoon tea was standard fare and was of a good standard as was the service. Our gripe was with the little things that shouldn't get past a 5* hotels watchful eye. I'm talking about the wobbly table leg that needed fixing, this can't have just happened as we sat down and I suspect if we go back tomorrow this leg will still be wobbly. The table cloth, was so worn it had holes in it - surely the staff must have seen this as they laid the table prior to our arrival? The near threadbare carpet on the floor of the room dedicated to afternoon tea.
The Chewton Glen was once listed as one of the top hotels of the world in 2006 - I now know why it's dropped out of this list - I'm surprised the hotels management doesn't.

I had lunch at Chewton Glen and what a wonderful place this is tucked in the heart of the New Forest it has everything you could want or possibly need.
The food choice for lunch was outstanding and the quality of course 5*.
Although I did not on this occasion stay at Chewton Glen I did take a look around and it lives up to its reputation as oppulent and the place to go for some luxury.

This hotel is the only reason I joined trip advisor!! Myself and my wife stayed in a treehouse suite and was greated at the main hotel by staff on face name terms. The general manager came to great us, and offered to use all the facilities as out tree house was being prepared. We was taken to the tree house on a buggy and then shown around the treehouse and its amazing facilities, coffee machine, hot tub, ipad to order your room service (whioch arrives like usain bolt runs the 100m). It was truley amazing. The dinner was fantastic as was the cocktails before hand. The service and staff were amazing and made you feel like they genuinely cared which is very rare. Well worth the money to stay in the tree house for a speacial occassion. will deffinately be returning!! thanks again

Room Tip: Stay in the tree house you will not be disapointed

We had a lovely time at Chewton Glen the hotel is lovely with great service. Our room was very luxurious and had every facility you could wish for. The spa is excellent and well worth a visit. This hotel is not cheap but if you want to push the boat out it is well worth it

Room Tip: Any suite is amazing.
