“Luxury unique experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2013

Stayed in the hotel and in the Tree House. Whilst the room in the hotel was very good there is only so much that can be done with a room. It is the Tree House that stands out as a really special unique treat that is well worth spending the extra. Service all round is wonderful where every effort is made to make you feel good. The Spa is total luxury with all sorts of hydro massage so and a large impressive pool. We only had a lunch, not an evening meal, but found it excellent. Have eaten in quite a few restaurants in the area but this was the best for quality and service, plus reasonable value. The breakfast is world class with fresh juices and all varieties of choice.

Room Tip: Go for the tree house!

I love this hotel, efficient friendly staff, great food, great rooms. Been twice and would definitely go back again. The rooms are very spacious and the bathrooms are fabulous. Plenty of wardrobe space if you have lots of luggage. Our room had a balcony which overlooked the gardens and is wonderful to sit out on with a drink if the weather is fine.

We have stayed here a few times . Our previous visit made us hesitate about booking in for the New Year house party as we thought the old CG atmosphere had gone , especially in the restaurant. However we ( 2 adults ,2 twenty year olds) did book for the celebrations , and were not disappointed. The rooms were lovely ( one silver-big but attic shaped - and one smaller bronze) and very quiet. The house party deal includes a wonderful afternoon tea, gala dinners , all drinks and dancing to live bands. The restaurant did amazingly well especially considering how full it was. My vegetarian guest said it was the very best vegetarian restaurant food she'd had and her menu matched ours , course for course. The staff are all amazing but the General manager ( Andrew?) is exceptional with just the right mix of friendly and efficient. Glad to see CG back on track !

Room Tip: You get what you pay for , but there's no shame in Bronze !

The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful, they paid special attention to our kids (3 under 7 year) and the kids loved the treehouse, all they wanted to do was hangout in the room and play in the jacuzzi - you also get golf buggies to take you to the main hotel which they thought was amazing. The kids club was perfect as was the spa and pool. The location of the hotel is lovely and its a nice walk to the coast.

The dinner was stupidly expensive and in my view not worth the spend (nearly £50 for a fairly average fillet steak) I had fish which was again, ok but not as special as I had hoped or expected - I couldn't even finish my starter as was so bland..... however, the service was very good and not snobby.

Breakfast was one of the best we've ever had so balanced out the disappointment in the dinner.

lovely staff, great for kids, luxurious without being snobby, all in beautiful surroundings but perhaps go elsewhere for dinner.

Room Tip: Suite 5 (treehouse) has loft room for kids which they loved.

We made up a party - eight of us to spend a night at Chewton Glen - and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We have been here many times before - and on this occasion we thought the food at dinner had improved. Breakfast is pleasant - a small buffet and obviously food cooked to order by request. Unfortunately, one of our party was given the wrong order - but hey ho - some of the staff possibly have a problem understanding English! It is quite pricey - so be prepared! All in all, a good hotel.

Room Tip: Go for the newly furbished junior suites or push the boat out and have a tree house.

We have stayed here several times but many, many years ago and this revisit was a nice surprise. Gone was the stuffy atmosphere and this now is very much a family hotel. The drive into the hotel is impressive. The reception area was a little downmarket – more like a three or four star hotel. All the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, except what one rather obnoxious, swaggering bar steward one evening.

Drinks were expensive as was the food. There is no longer a Michelin star restaurant and the food served throughout the many restaurant areas is of the same quality – very good but NOT Michelin star quality. In my opinion this is a mistake. Located close to the sea, the walk to the sea is very pleasant but not for those unsteady on their feet.

This has to be one of the best family hotels in the UK. But be aware – it is a family hotel for the well healed. They try hard with certain rules to avoid the children taking over every area and the rules work quite well. The swimming pool is well appointed and the hydrotherapy pool area is very good (but not for children). See my entry for Whatley Manor for a better experience for couples.

For the price (expect to pay £600 a night) I would strongly suggest they rethink their dining and have one dedicated fine dining area with the rest for bistro type food, with a dress code to match. Old jeans and t shirts are an insult to the food and other diners. As it stands, this was not good value but still a great experience.

Room Tip: Ask about the tree house rooms!
