“Setting Sun”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

I do wonder how traditional pubs with ghastly floral carpets, sticky tables and laminated menus make a living ? Simple, they serve superb food promptly and with a smile ! Right -- just a shame therefore that the Rising Sun hasn't fathomed that one. The car park is often full (probably because it's about the only pub in that part of the New Forest), What it does have going for it is low prices, so if that's your thing, go for it. But if you're in an average hurry, don't bother.

“A lovely pub in a beautiful setting”
Reviewed April 9, 2013

We love the New Forest - and this pub is beautifully positioned right on the edge of the Forest with ponies on the common outside. We have visited it a few times when we have been down on holiday and have never been disappointed. There is a large outside area and luckily the weather has always been fine ( although not necessarily warm!) enough for us to sit outside. There is a large play area but that is separate from the dining area and so you don't have other people's children disturbing you eating ( and you don't have to worry about your own disturbing other people).
The food is nice and reasonably priced and even at busy times, we never seemed to notice the wait in service - which speaks volumes! :)

“Will not be returning”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

A sorry Ploughmans consisted of:

1 slice of ham
1 piece of cheese
1 pickled onion
1 spoon of pickle
1 roll
1 handful of wilted salad
2 sachets of butter

A total lack of effort, like going into a time warp of 1980's, such a shame.

“The Rising Sun is a gem of a find”
Reviewed April 6, 2013

We were staying in the area and this pub looked nice from the outside and also ponies near and it advertised a cream tea which my Husband fancied.Once inside we were not disappointed and the pub had plenty of room and friendly helpful staff and the cream tea my husband said, was the best he ever had.In fact we were so impressed we brought our son there as we were meeting up with my Sister who lives in Dorset and wanted to take her to somewhere nice to eat.We were welcomed back by the lady who had served us our cream tea and said it was nice to see us again. Both our son and my Sister were as impressed as us.The food was delicious (I had a steak and kidney pudding) and it was delicious and my Husband and I had a dessert which was lovely also and a nice portion size.We look forward to visiting this pub again when we next come to this area.and would highly recommend it.
