“Golf weekend....excellent!”
Reviewed June 15, 2012

Myself and 6 friends recently had a 3 day golf trip at Old Thorns and were very impressed by the whole experience.

The course was very well presented, fairways and greens looked very good even after the recent poor weather. All of us are regular golfers and found the course testing (not a bad thing). Glad we hired the buggies!

Our rooms at the hotel were better than what we were expecting after staying at many different golf resorts/hotels and being left disappointed, they were clean, tidy and modern. Couldnt think of a down side to note.

Nice touch having a on-site starbucks for a pre-round pick me up.

We had dinner in the main restraunt, which was a cavery buffet style set up, (breakfast was similar service). Decent portions and good quality. We then had drinks in the sports bar before moving into the atrium bar for the rest of the night untill the early hours, the barstaff and manager on duty were friendly and effiecent. (decent cocktail menu)

Overall found it good value for money and left very happy, looking to set up the annual work golf event there.

Stayed for two nights on a three day golfing holiday arranged some my club members. My room was well presented and seemed new. The bathroom radiator didn't work, which left the bathroom running with condensation after every shower. The maintainance staff didn't appear while I was there. The staff in the golf professional shop seemed at two extremes one person enormously helpful and the others very off-hand. The course itself is hilly and interesting, a buggy would be a good idea, on this occasion the course was poorly presented, presumably because of the recent rain. Bunkers full of water and other not raked. Food was mostly buffet style, but the choice was good. I didn't try all the eating places

We recently got married at Old Thorns and held our wedding reception there too. The staff were wonderful and ensured that our special day was perfect. Every detail was considered, our every wish was granted and along with our guests we had a fantastic day.
The beautiful venue was the perfect setting for our wedding photos. The food was wonderful - from our canapes to our wedding breakfast and evening buffet. Many of our guests stayed at the hotel and were delighted with their rooms.
We searched for years for the perfect venue and we would recommend Old Thorns to any couples looking for a wedding venue or for anyone hosting a celebration event.

Well well... you book a spa day at the end of a 4 day bank holiday weekend and kinda hope that that was a good thing.

So, on turning up to what only can be described as a mini town, you scratch your head as to where the spa is, there's oddly no signs to it, maybe a clue.. So after going into 3 different places found it and a staff member that actually knew where it was.

The receptionist was nice enough, and showed me to the changing room which was very tiny, if there were two people changing in there you'd feel like you had turned bi.

So then walked across into the chill room, which was freezing cold and awkward as there was no music or tv on, so laying down shivering in the robe in total silence was not really relaxing.

Then to the massage, again the room was freezing apparently due to the air con, but the table was heated, so every time a towel was lifted to apply the oils on me i was shivering again. The massage was with a bamboo stick, this is to get a good deep massage, however when its rattling over your shin bones and clipping over other bones time and time again whilst shivering i have to say i was very glad it ended.

So after... well i asked about the pool, and Jacuzzi, alas Jacuzzi was broken and the pool closed. The gym?? Well that cost £5 induction and is on the other side, so i gave in and went for the complementary carvery, which was ok.

But really the spa is rubbish, i left stressed and would of being warmer if i had stood in pal mall in the rain.

Very attractive place inside and out, staff were abit vague about bookings, we booked and checked in on arrival even though had phoned day before. Had a lovely massage in the spa, unfortunately the pool was not open and found out it opened the following weekend!
The carvery dinner was lovely! And the sports bar and atrium bar were reasonably priced. Would definately stay again, hopefully when all facilities are open! Overall excellent value for a massage/dinner/drinks/bed/breakfast for just over £200 for two.

Stayed as a couple last weekend - it's a modern, large and stylish place. The whole place has a scale which is quite impressive really - public and private areas all generous and furnished very well indeed. Our room was big and spacious - well kitted out and comfortable - bathroom was huge. Everything clean and well maintained. So, downsides? Not many really - it was a very hot weekend and we so needed a window to open - we did have a lovely balcony with french doors BUT it was a shared balcony so leaving the door open all night seemed very weird. Our room - 302 was above the sports bar and v noisy - tiled corridors meant a fair bit of noise from high heels passing by. But that was it - no other grumbles - it really was v nice. Didn't eat - so no idea of how the food is.
