Description: The Phoenix is a historic and magnificent building in a prime location, with a large car park and a beautiful, peaceful garden. The food is simple, fresh, as much as possible local. Andrew Ryder, chef proprietor is passionate about provenance and seasonality. The menu changes frequently, to allow for seasonal favourites. The service is friendly and informal, staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. There is always a good selection of real ales and the extensive wine list suits all tastes and pockets.

We wanted to take a special Aunt who lives in the area and followed the recommendations on this website. We were not disappointed withe food,,,, tasted delicious. However, we had to wait 40 minutes for the starter which was quite frustrating and we expected a long wait for our main course but had a pleasant suprise. In anycase, the food was well worth the wait....it was the best Sunday lunch we have had out for some considerable time....and we eat out a lot! A very good informal dining experience, throughly enjoyed by our special Aunt as well.

Excellent traditional pup with above average food and a superb selection of wine and beer. Highly recommended

This pub is Good! Local produce, which is to be supported and admired, good execution in the kitchen and the end result on the plate excellent. Service also good and personal - personal from the kitchen too. All in all, what we would wish from an informal dining experience. Would definitely recommend.

A little background - together with a group of close friends we enjoy a (fairly) bracing monthly Sunday morning walk in our SW Surrey/North Hampshire area, followed by pub lunch. Over the years we have been subjected to a wide variety of meals purporting to be top quality lunch...many have been good to very good, some have been OK to dire. Yesterday (November 11, 2012), the couple responsible for organising the walk and booking the lunch, chose The Phoenix. Coming from Hartley Witney they knew the pub well, so we were optimistic. Despite a slightly longer than usual wait for the reserved table, and an equivalent wait for the main course (maybe not helped by me being the only one to have a starter, unable to resit the oysters) The roasts, and my local hog meat sausage and mash, were nothing short of superb. Tender, well-cooked meat from a Hook butcher, fresh and beautifully cooked vegetables, different gravies for the pork, lamb and chicken ( not that I've never known before), charming and attentive staff, all at a very reasonable cost. The plum crumble, bread and butter pudding and local ice cream were also 5*. And no, this glowing review was not influenced by my wife winning a large joint of gammon in the meat raffle. Major recommendation for The Phoenix and the owners, who do it all.

We are relative newcomers to this restaurant, having only visited for the first time in September 2012 - but having now been 3 times - each time as good - the staff are friendly, the ambience is excellent and the food is very good. We last went on Sunday and had the roast chicken - fabulous. Would definately recommend to anyone.
