The location is fantastic with a deck overlooking the lake.
The food was good but the service could have been better.

A group of friends met here, sat outside and each ordered different food. Their food looked ok but the beef Sunday roast was a different matter. Definitely not worth £12. The roast potatoes were off, the carrots old & dried. The cauliflower cheese was definitely the frozen variety. The apple pie was lovely, thank goodness. I was shocked to see a dog in the patio area where diners were. The owner was embarrassed when the dog decided to urinate on the decking!

It was a lovely warm Sunday and we decided to have lunch here so we could sit outside in the no smoking area enjoying the lake and cool breeze. The waiter was very helpful on arriving as we both have problems with our legs and he helped us down the two stairs to the dining area. We were promptly served with 3 types of bread and a dipping sauce. I had the salt and pepper battered squid with aioli and they were a really good size and tender. My husband had the half pint of prawns and, although he enjoyed it, he said they did not taste really as fresh as he expected. We both decided to have the roast dinner because being only two of us, we rarely have a roast.

When it came, my Yorkshire pudding , with a hard slice of stuffing nestled in it, was stone cold on one side with cold gravy with the other just slightly warm with slightly warm gravy on it. When I mentioned it to the waiter, he responded that Yorkshire puddings always come cold and you have to request them to be warm or hot. He did return a warm one with a separate bowl of gravy. Tell that to a northerner and see what kind of reply you would get! The warm roast loin pork looked and tasted as though it had been a couple of slices of loin that had been warmed through as it had that awful taste and did not appear as if it had ever been part of a roast joint. The cauliflower cheese was just warm and overcooked to the point of mush with very little flavour or of cheese. The carrots had been old ones, still with their skins, and they had white dried blotches on them and were again just warm and thoroughly overcooked. You could use the stuffing slice for a doorstep! The broccoli was again just warm and overcooked and my three roast potatoes were soggy and sad - completely inedible. The only thing that tasted quite nice was the warm Yorkshire. My husband had the roast sirloin and, again, this did not appear to be part of a joint but just three slices of really overdone meat that had been cooked and just hung around together with equally overdone vegetables and sad potatoes. When the waiter arrived and asked what we thought of the meal, I said it was awful and he promptly said that he would deduct the two meals from the bill and appeared to be taking it back to the chef. When paying the bill, he said that the standard of the Sunday roast was the usual standard they served so, if you enjoy a good roast that is a proper roast, don't have it. We think that had we had some of the other meals on offer, then we would probably have enjoyed our visit but we appreciate a good roast and this did not match up to our expectations. It is a pity as the setting was so lovely and was not too difficult to get into the restaurant when one is disabled and the waiters were very friendly and helpful but the standard of the food we had did not make us feel like returning again.

This is not my first review of The Heron on the Lake but I felt it deserved a new one. As it was such a lovely evening we decided to venture out here last night. The outdoor seating area is above the actual lake so it always makes for a nice view at sunset. The service was a little slow but then they were very busy. My husband had the sardines recommended to him by the waitress and she said that she had been told that although they weren't boneless the bones were fine and should be manageable. when they arrived they were not fine and it made the fish difficult to eat. we have had sardines in other places and the bones just melt away, these sardines weren't brilliant. when the waitress came over to see how the food was we mentioned it and in a heartbeat she apologised and offered him something else. within five minutes he had a fresh piece of salmon and was able to enjoy the rest of his meal. fantastic service and such lovely food. the chicken and bacon cob salad is worth trying ! I was a little surprised to be given a soup spoon to eat my lemon tart but it didn't detract from the taste !

This was the first time we'd eaten at the Heron on the Lake without children & it was a very different experience!
The restaurant was very busy as it was Friday night & a hot muggy evening.
Lots of people were istting oustide oveer looking the lake. We sat indoors in the "grown up" area -no children, just other couples. It was lovely!
The waitress was very helpful - talking us through the specials.
My salad was delicious. My partner had the steak & said it was delicious.
The service was good, considering how busy it was & we were able to eat at a leiurely pace, enjoying the food, wine & atmosphere.
Lovely restaurant, lovely waiting staff, lovely location, lovely meal.
Highly recommended.
