We went to Nicolino's the night before the Great South Run, down the road in Portsmouth; they were very busy and almost fully booked so I don't know whether this was a representative experience.
Overall, the food was very good quality and very well presented with generous portions; it was a shame that we had to return one of the starters as it was covered in anchovies and fish oil, which weren't included in the description (which actually appeared to be a vegetarian option!)
The service was relatively slick and friendly without being particularly attentive (each time we needed something we had to try and attract someone's attention rather than someone checking to see if we were ok). There were a large number of waiting staff but they failed to operate as a cohesive unit with requests needing to be repeated more than once.
Overall we were happy with our meal but were surprised that we had been charged for the returned starter - when we explained that the dish was incorrectly described on the menu the waitress insisted on getting a menu and reading the description to confirm; she then pointed out that she wasn't aware of this issue (as though it was our fault) before asking what we wanted to do, rather than offering to take the item off the bill. The final resolution was fine but it made of an uncomfortable end to the meal which, unfortunately can completely change the overall experience.
