We went to this very comfortable Hotel for our Sunday Dinner with friends last Sunday and had an excellent meal. The service was very thorough, but not intrusive and we were allowed time between courses. The Landlord has a very dry sense of humour which made for more fun during the meal. We will be back for sure as it was all good quality and good value for money. Many thanks to the Chefs, Staff and of course the Landlord.

We stayed a couple of nights and ate there the first night. The food was very good and the atmosphere in the bar was great. There was live music and the bar was full so there was a good buzz. It was really busy and the staff were busy but no one smiled at all at any time while we were there - but they were all polite and very helpful.
The room we had had wasn't that brilliant, it was clean but was a bit tatty and would benefit from a spruce up. The headboard on the bed was sticky which wasn't that nice. It wasn't that cheap and so we expected a higher standard room.

We stayed here for the Goodwood Festival of Speed and it proved a perfect spot. This is more than just a town hotel. Paul and Veronica are excellent hosts who take the time and trouble to form a relationship with guests and go that little bit extra for them eg. providing a meal (excellent roast) on the Sunday evening when the hotel does not normally serve food. Evenings meals are definitely a cut above 'pub grub', inventive menus and good quality locally sourced found means that there is no need to go out of the hotel. All the staff are friendly and helpful and make you feel as if they really want you to be there! This is not a 'given' in other hotels. We stayed in 5 other places on our trip south and didn't find the same treatment! I would not hesitate to recommend a stay here. Emsworth is a lovely little town with the advantage of evening walks by the water.

Room Tip: If there are rooms at the back of the hotel, these would be quieter, especially when the windows nee...

We stayed here whilst visiting the (nearby) Goodwood Festival of Speed.Having only relatively recently taken the place over, the landlord and landlady ,Paul and Veronica are still in the process of putting their own stamp on the place. Whilst the decor in the ,still comfortable, bedrooms was a little tired this was more than compensated for by the wonderfully warm welcome and the excellent food.Interesting old building with lots of character. We will definitely stay there again.

We were booked to stay here for one night only after being out in the area for the evening. Whilst initial impressions were that the place was tired, the lady who checked us in was pleasant and let us know that there was a private party in the bar so they may be serving a little later. The double room we had booked was furnished ok and was very clean. When we got back just before 11pm the party was still going strong, although the tunes played were dubious ar best! The music quietened down at around midnight although went on til after 1am. The noise from the road was very bad all night and as it was the hottest day of the year the windows was open and the room was still stiffling. We had not booked breakfast and left very early. We wouldn't stay again but it may be ok midweek in cooler weather.

we were a bit aprehensive about this hotel due to the previous posts from other guests ... but we bit the bullet and went ahead with our stay ..... we were very pleased with the overall stay which was for one night as we were in Alton attending an engagement party - the hotel itself is to be fair a little tired and out dated - we were greeted at check in by a very friendly lady who explained all the details to us thoroughly and advised we had been allocated 2 single rooms - which was handy as thats what we booked :-) - one was rather small and the other was much bigger - we decided to choose our rooms upon seeing them - my friend took the smaller but perfectly adequate single which was clean and the bathroom was spotless - to my relief i was given a double room which at over 6ft tall is a bonus as i wasnt looking forward to sleeping in a single bed again the room and en suite were both spotless the bed was comfy and there were adequate towels etc...
we checked in and dropped our bags and went out for a wander ......
we returned from the party around 11.15 and would have liked a nightcap but the bar had alrady closed - the only criticism is the bar closed at 11.00 which is unusual in this day and age - we encountered a few more guests who would have liked a quick nightcap before bed too - however we made do with a cup of tea in the room and a bit of TV before bed.
Breakfast was served by another young lady who was friendly and polite - we had a full english with toast and cereal etc - the only criticism on the breakfast was the sausage was a clearly a cheap make but the rest was fine.
on the whole quite a good experience and perfectly adequate for the price paid
would stay again if the need arises

Room Tip: i was in Rm 5 which was at the front and the road outside was busy all night but it is in the city c...
