Stayed the night in late August and also ate in the restaurant in the evening. The pub is located on a quiet road near Alton with lovely views over arable fields.

We stayed in the Robert Graves room which at £130 is a bit toppy but it was a lovely room being genuinely olde worlde without being too staged and had a fantastically comfortable bed and a nice modern en-suite with posh lotions etc to almost justify the cost.

The pub is a great place to while away an evening and I am told it is even better in the Winter when the log fires are lit. They have a good range of beers and wines and the food is really very good with locally sourced food at pretty reasonable prices £15 - £20 for mains.

All in all a great place to either go for a meal or to get away for a weekend. I'd like to be able to give it 4.5 stars but I'll sway to 5.

We stayed in the Rupert Brooke room which is a large double room with balcony and ensuite shower room. The balcony is accessed from a triple door.

There is no separate reception for the hotel rooms and a member of the pub staff took us up to our room. Unfortunately, it was a hot afternoon and the sun had been shining through the closed triple door leaving the room stifflingly hot which was a shame, as was the difficulty we had opening the triple door.

However, the room was immaculately clean and full of character. There were home-made biscuits with the tea and coffee and a small bottle of fresh milk in the fridge for us to have with our tea and coffee.

The en suite shower-room was also immaculately clean and the large overhead shower and large shower cubicle were a delight.

We booked a table in the restaurant for dinner and the food and service were excellent. We can recommend the roast tomato and red pepper soup and brawn cakes starters. The fresh bread was also superb. The sausage main course was delicious as was the chicken kiev. One of our party has a severe nut allergy and none of the items on the menu was specifically marked as nut free but the waiting staff did double check and there were no mis-haps.

The lemon tart and lemon eton mess desert and the chocolate brownie with salt caramel ice cream were similarly delicious.

However, upon returning to our room we discovered the second problem, namely that the bed had 4 feather/down pillows and a feather/down duvet. While a lot of people might consider this the height of luxury, those suffering from feather allergies do not. To be fair, we did not go and find a member of staff to ask for synthetic fibre pillows and duvet and this led to a restless night for the allergy sufferer and, consequently, for the non-allergic spouse.

Breakfast on Sunday's is from 9am and we were downstairs in the bar at 9 ready for breakfast, however, it took 10 minutes for the sole member of staff to appear. We were offered a selection of breakfast cereals from the dorset cereal company but all of these contain nuts and the member of staff was unable to offer a nut free alternative. The full english was extremely good with fresh plum tomatos not tinned.

The setting was superb and despite the issues we had a very comfortable stay and have already recommended the Inn to family members.

Room Tip: The Rupert Brooke is advertised as the best room.

I stayed at the Anchor because Basingstoke is so dull and expensive.

Whilst not the cheapest place to stay, it's more than comparable with some of the major chain hotel in Basingstoke and 1000 times better. The rooms are superb: big beds, fantastic individual decoration, fresh milk and orange in the fridge.

The pub is loaded with character and the beer is top notch. The food...well the food is of a high standard and I'm not known for my praise. Forget other reviews about it not being a "gastro-pub" - whatever the hell that is? The food was excellent - crab to start with (seasoned beautifully). A loin of perfectly cooked English veal and veal brawn (the brawn was packed with flavour) and an outstanding treacle tart to finish.

The owner should be very proud of their staff. Throughout my evening I was served with professionalism, humour, good manners and care; and not a soul over 25. The breakfast – Historic!

I’ll be back.
