We thought we'd try The Swan for Sunday lunch as couldn't be bothered to cook. We didn't book and were seated straight away although after we were seated they seemed to get a rush on so was probably a good job we arrived when we did.

We were immediately offered drinks and as we were ready to order we ordered straight away, choosing a roast pork, a roast beef and a side of cauliflower cheese to share. We were offered an additional Yorkshire pudding but declined.

Drinks were served immediately and the food after about 15 minutes. The first thing that struck me was the size... The plates were massive!

The food was really tasty but we definitely didn't need the side let alone the additional Yorkshire!

We didn't have a dessert, just a coffee which was fine. Despite the rush we were left time to digest. When we finally got the bill it was a very pleasant £28.

Our server was very attentive and friendly, but we did witness other tables who were served by who I assume was the manager who didn't receive such good service. My review and scores are for our experience.

All in all I would definitely go back - the other food looked nice as well so will definitely be back to try that.

We recently had quite a reasonable lunch at this place, the food being tasty & well presented generally. However, there were problems in trying to obtain fresh cutlery & additional sauce to make the meal more pleasant. One serving member of staff displayed a somewhat bored demeanor whilst arranging all this but most notably at the end when, whilst seated with hand on head, she suggested painfully that we pay in the Bar; a more attentive young member of staff quickly sorted our bill out in the Restaurant. We were aware of other guests who subsequently discussed their complaints with staff.

A restaurant to be recommended but with some reservation.

value for money, cosy atmosphere with attentive staff. Nothing too much trouble. Liked varied menu. Disliked Eton Mess desert.

We stayed here with a group of 8 others for a reunion...and had a great time! Breakfast very good and room comfortable. This hotel would have been given 5 stars by us if it had not been for the following: (a) We arrived at 1.45pm to check in. We were told straight away that we could not do this until 2pm. We had 2 small sports bags which we asked if we could leave, as we thought we go to Costa for a coffee. We were told no, we would have to carry them back to the car. Customer services very POOR! (b) Its a shame that there is no resident bar, the bar there shuts and you can not get a drink. These points never were a problem when we stayed in March at the Alton House Hotel.

We have eaten here twice now, and both times the food has been good. The pub is very nice compared to the other pubs on Alton high street. Both times I have had the fish and chips, it is really good. The fish is crispy, the mushy peas are tasty and the chips are good too. We have also had the hunters chicken, which is tasty. The set menu is good value. We will probably eat here again sometime.
