“Visit Alton”
Reviewed November 17, 2011

Alton is a small market town, and the Gallery and Museum are interesting, not much else ,except the Church where the Roundheads killed 12 Royalists in the church, and there are still the bullet hole visible.

“A little jewel of a museum in Alton”
Reviewed April 11, 2011

If you're interested in social history or art, the Allen Gallery should be a must-see when in the Alton area -- if you can't get to Staffordshire for the museum there, this facility is a very nice alternative. Its collections are well-presented and well-lit, and when I visited it was not at all crowded. There is a large collection of 18th and 19th century teawares, a range of country pottery, a Wedgwood case, many many tiles, and smaller collections of non-ceramic articles such as silver wine-bottle labels.

“Best teapot collection in Hampshire”
Reviewed November 5, 2009

The Allen Gallery is a small museum in Alton town centre in which you will find a wonderful collection of ceramics including teapots, cups, plates, ornaments and tiles. Many different types of ceramics are on display including stoneware, porcelain and tinware.

There are often gallery activities available for children, but even if there isn't an organised activity, kids can borrow paper and coloured pencils to make their own drawings of some of the unusual pieces on display.

There is also a large room devoted to changing displays, which often include something interactive for children, and there's a lovely garden at the back of the museum which has seating to enjoy a break on a warm day. Near the entrance to the museum is a small coffee shop.

The Allen Gallery staff are very friendly and helpful, and admission is free.
