Copthorne Hotel Manchester
Ranked #16 of 20 Hotels in Salford

This should be a reasonable business standard hotel, well located for Salford quays and Old Trafford Stadium. The problem is the paper thin walls which meant I spent a sleepless night listening to the rooms around me going to the toilet all night. I felt like I was sleeping in a gents loo. It was unbearable. I don't understand how you can build a modern hotel and have no regard for sound installation, it's unforgivable.

For a family wedding I booked online 2 jnr suites at the hotel and received seperate confirmation numbers accordingly. However when I turned up, only one room was reserved and this had been downgraded to a standard family room at the request of reservartions - who don`t work weekends. The receptionist`s attitude was that she couldn`t care less - it was not her fault. She was a disgrace to the service industry , argued for 5 minutes, and then asked do I want a room or not ? I was offered 2 Executive twin rooms for the price of one as compensation. There was nothing executive about these rooms,2 single beds ( my wife had to share with our 3 year old ),Tiny in size, stinking of smoke, old fashioned, basic, poor shower above the bath - probably the worst room I have ever stayed in. I believe that because I booked the rooms 4 mths ago at a discounted rate of less than 1/2 the standard room rate, they subequently sold the rooms off at the full rate knowing they could offer compensation and make money.

This hotel is not worthy of 4 stars, cars fighting for space in the car park, no swimming pool or facility whatsoever, the main bar was very small and didn`t offer a good selection, staff were a joke, the wardrobe fell apart, tv didn`t work, although breakfast was surprisingly good.

All hotels can provide a TV and iron in each room to achieve a particular star rating, what seperates the hotels is the standard of service and how they deal with problems. For this hotel customer service is non existent and they dont want to know about any problems.

If you have booked this hotel already, firstly check you do have a reservation - especially if you got the room cheap; and do not expect a great deal - that way you will not be dissapointed. If you have not already booked, I warn you not to and try another which might offer reasonable service.

We stayed at this hotel for one night in June. We chose the hotel mainly on price and location as we were going to the Lyric Theatre (which is walkable from here). We had stayed there once before many years ago. Unfortunately, since our last stay, the decor has not been updated and the main corridors now have the look of an old people's home and the smell of cheap car air-freshener. The rooms are spacious enough but need updating and a more thorough clean between guests. Don't expect flat screen TVs here - It's still very much the preserve of the cathode ray tube.
The public areas are ok but not up to the supposed 4 star rating. The bar area is lifeless and the outdoor seating was limited, untidy and only accessed awkwardly via the restaurant.
On an unusually hot evening for Manchester, the lack of air conditioning made the rooms uncomfortable at night.
At a good price though, I could almost forgive all that if it weren't for the other inconsiderate guests. Be warned, this hotel is also a short distance from Old Trafford football and cricket grounds and a short taxi ride into Manchester. The hotel attracts an unpleasantly high proportion of men - only groups who enjoy returning to their rooms drunk at 4am and swearing at the top of their voices all night long. Add this to the fact that all the room doors have to be slammed to shut and I'm afraid one night was enough for us. We complained to staff but were brushed off (they obviously get the same feedback on a regular basis).
Unless you are staying over for the match, I'd give this place a miss. Spend a few pounds more and stay in the centre. It's worth it for a good night's sleep!

Booked this hotel through laterooms for a weekend. Reception staff really nice and friendly always on hand to offer local advice. Room was nice - spotless clean, comfy beds - lovely feather pillows (unlike what previous reviewer said, maybe they acted upon this comment!) Only critisism I can think is the bathroom was a little dated and room (318) was very hot. Had to sleep with the windows open, but it was still hot. A busy hotel which gave a nice atmosphere - plenty of parking. Tram stop (Exchange Quay) a 2 mins walk away - We caught the tram back at 12:45am. 10 mins walk to Loury Centre. Didn't eat at hotel, but it was busy with people from outside which I presume is a good sign. Would stay here again if I was visiting Manchester.

I've stayed here a couple of times before and have had same / similar issues each time.

This hotel seems to be quite a popular meeting place for non-residents so when we arrived at lunchtime there were no parking spaces so had to abandon the car.

Ordered lunch but had to wait for a table to be vacated before sitting down.

Then the next morning you often have to wait for a table for breakfast, not good if you are in a rush.

The rooms themselves are average for the type of the hotel, perfectly adequate.

Booked a double room, (with A.Y.C.E. buffet breakfast) for a ridiculously good rate of £54 on Superbreak for one night over the BH weekend. Room was perfectly Ok, a bit like an upmarket Travelodge really. Room clean, good bathroom, no noticeable noise. Everything was as expected really - although not sure it's worth the £120 they normally charge in the week.......
Excellent breakfast that is usually £10 but it was VERY quiet this weekend.

The main selling points for this hotel are
1) the friendly staff - we didn't encounter a single member of staff who wasn't happy to help
2) the proximity to the Metrolink tram - just a 2 minute walk away
and
3) the large free car park.

The main problem for me was the decor. Parts of the hotel badly need refurbished; they need to look at everything from the ripped seating in the bar area to the faded 80s decor in the bedrooms.
We were in a large, clean, comfortable room - not facing the Quays. The shower was good, the hair dryer terrible. The room was decorated in a riot of peach patterns.

We paid an extra £10 for breakfast but it wasn't worth it. We didn't go down until 10am - an early start for us! - and the food was cold and shrivelled.
All in all, I'd say that we got reasonable value for money but I'd probably disagree with the 4*
