The hotel is in a perfect location for Old Trafford & has great links to the city centre. A brilliant option for a budget hotel in Manchester. Only downside is the breakfast area which is a bit chaotic & messy if the hotel is busy but it is a free breakfast so can't complain too much!!

The good bits: location, location, location! The hotel is great for easy access to the Lowry mall, theatre and other attractions. The price represents excellent value for money, especially given that the food at breakfast is okay and with a hot option. The public areas overlook the water, as do many of the bedrooms, so the outlook is great. Our room, when we got it, was perfectly adequate for a one night stay, with a comfy bed, a clean shower room and a great outlook.

The bad bits: our documentation said check-in was from 2 p.m. This was our arrival time and we were told that our room wasn't ready. This was not a problem, but after a wait of 40 minutes and no offer of refreshment, we began to think we had been forgotten about. I spoke to a member of staff who apologised for our wait and went to reception. He said that he would find us an equivalent room - I had requested a room overlooking the water on a high floor. This accounts for many of the rooms. He immediately allocated us a room on the top floor overlooking the watersports centre. It was excellent - apart from us having to tidy away the lunch left on the windowsill. Having left our stuff, we decided to go out. On awaiting the lift, we heard lots of loud converation coming from one of the housekeeping rooms. It occurred to us that if the staff spent as much time getting rooms ready as they did yakking, then customers might have their rooms ready on arrival. Maybe this is something management might want to look at.

We had noticed on check-in that there was a poster about breakfast waiting times, which was helpful, so our expectations were not raised when we went down for breakfast the following morning. We had no trouble finding a table. We did have a problem finding a table that had been cleaned. We didn't - just cleaned it ourselves. It did appear that there is some expectation by the hotel that customers will self clear, but tables still need the once-over and staff seem undecided as to whether this or replenishment were the priority. As a result neither were done very well. It really does just need a bit of management oversight to get this right. It proved impossible to find a set of clean cutlery, even though there was a plentiful supply. Everything had to be wiped over. The food servery area is extremely cramped and chaotic. A one way system is indicated, but people were blissfully unaware and consequently it was a manic operation to get what was wanted. All it needs is a bit more organisation and oversight.

All in all, I believe that you get what you pay for here. If your expectations are not high, you will be pleasantly surprised, but standards do seem lower than other Holiday Inns and it is a shame, because there is so much going for the hotel. The charge for car parking is ridiculous - you're not in a prime town centre location here. It did not affect us, as we travelled by tram but if you are new to the area, be warned that car parking at the Quays is exorbitant if you are going to the theatre, galleries or restaurants and you overstay the 4 hours free parking (must spend a minimum of £5 and get your card authorised.) You are a captive audience here.

Room Tip: If you like to watch the world go by, ask for a room overlooking the watersports centre and promenad...

Thank you for your recent review which you have shared on Trip Advisor.

It was nice to read of your positive feed back in regards to the location of the hotel and amenities within the area.

Correctly so, check in time is from 2pm and our Housekeeping team work exceptionally hard to ensure that they can turn around the rooms as quickly as possible, this can sometimes be restricted as check out is up to 12 noon and we are not able to ask guests to leave before this time. It was encouraging to read that my team were apologetic and were also able to re-allocate you a room with your requested view.

In regards to breakfast, within the menu on each table it does request that guests self clear their table once finished with so that the team can move quicker is cleaning down the table for the next guest. Sadly this is not always the case and when the request is not met the team then have to not only clear the table but still clean as well which can cause delays for guest waiting for seats.

The buffet area is set out with a flow through system from the point of collecting your tray, cutlery and necessary edible items, there is a 'no access' sign at the far end of the buffet area but again on occasions this is ignored and then causes congestion as people do not follow the correct entrance signage.

I am excited to say that we will be getting extra tables and seating for the breakfast area during the current month which will enhance our capacity for high volume mornings.

Thank you for your feed back, whether it be positive or negative it always helps us to look at ways to improve our service and strive to improve the guest experience.

I am sorry to say that, but...on a Sunday morning you just expect to sleep, as far as you can...noway the fire alarm started at 7.15 am and it turned on again at 7.30....if you call the reception they will tell you that someone is smoking in the room and that the security guy is going to investigate...if you ask during the check out...you are informed about the fact that someone was having a shower by keeping the bathroom door opened...and the steam turned the fire alarm on...

a part from this...let's move to the breakfast area...extremely poor, no choices and moreover very dirty. Unclean forks, knives and spoons...

I could say that the room looked pretty good...and that the area seems to be be nice...Unfortunately we couldn't have a walk along the canal, due to a heavy wind.

I personally wouldn't recommend it.

Probably it is a matter of price...I didn't pay, so it could be that what you get is what you pay for.

Thank you for taking the time to post you review on trip Advisor following on from your stay at the Holiday Inn Express - Manchester Salford Quays.

Unfortunately when the fire alarm is activated it is to warn guests that there is potential danger in the building and until it is fully investigated the alarm is not silenced as at the hotel we will never put out guests lives at risk as I am sure you can appreciate you do not want to be in any potential danger whilst staying with us. I understand your frustration but the correct procedures are followed to ensure that the hotel is safe and secure for you.

Although we do not have Security guards at this property the Manager on Duty followed the correct safety procedure.

I was sorry to read of your disappointing experience with breakfast and please rest assure that we are in the process of currently re-visiting out breakfast service. I am excited to say that we will be getting extra seating for the breakfast room so this will enable more room to be available for all of our guests.

Whether feedback be positive or negative we always strive to improve our service.

Stayed here in February, not on a night before or after an Old Trafford game, so it was really quiet. Location is great, right on the waterside, and opposite the Lowry Outlet Shopping place, cinema etc. We stayed here for a visit to the Trafford Centre, which was about a five minute drive away, and apparently you can also get a tram to the city centre from here too. The room was fine - standard Holiday Inn Express, but the sofa bed they had put out for my (toddler) son converted into a big double, which meant there was absolutely no floor space in the room with two double beds in it. However we weren't in it long, so it didn't matter too much I suppose. We went down to breakfast about half an hour before it was due to finish, but there wasn't anything left - just some bits of cereal and bread, and some congealed looking hot stuff. No muffins, fruit - nothing had been replenished. The serving area was filthy - crumbs everywhere, spilt juice and milk, mess where dirty spoons had been put down on the counter. I saw another guest wipe it over with a cloth cos she couldn't stand it, told one of the members of staff that she had cleaned up and the girl just said "ok" and walked off. No thanks or apology for doing her job for her. The breakfast seating area was nice though, and overlooked the water - this redeemed the bad food slightly. I probably would stay again because of the location and my husband gets the reward points, but please tidy up the breakfast area and ensure that there's plenty of choice right up to the end of serving time.

Room Tip: Rooms have views of either the water or Old Trafford - ask before you arrive if you have a preferenc...

Stayed here for a one night business trip.
Stayed here many times before.
All the holiday inns are the same.
Some are in noisy areas.
Some are in need of modernisation.
Some are small.
Some are big.
Most don't have baths.
All have choices of hard or soft pillows.
You know what to expect and in that respect they are all ok.
If you are a priority member you get points ..... So you can always stay again .. Only this time for pleasure or leisure.

Room Tip: High floor facing away from the waterside ( so the Canadian geese don't wake you up too early)

Really poor experience at this Holiday Inn Express. Arrived for one night to watch a game of football at Old Trafford. Only good point, location great. Booked through Hotels.com & it wasn't clear from the website that the only option for a family room was a sofa bed + double bed - it appeared that I'd booked & requested a room with 2 single beds & a sofa bed. So on arrival to be told that the only option was the sofa bed + double bed you can imagine that neither I or my 2 teenage sons relished the thought of sharing a bed! Despite two requests to change room the receptionist could have shown little less interest in our situation. It did not help to be told by the duty manager in the morning that there were empty rooms & we could have had an additional room - why not offer that when asked? Room & bathroom were tired with fraying sheets - television flicked on & off.

Then there was the breakfast "experience" - what a shambles! There was no way they could accomodate everyone for breakfast in what can only be described as a service area slightly bigger than a broom cupboard. We arrived at 08:30 to a queue out to reception - that queue remained for the next hour with a member of staff saying every 5 minutes "sorry everyone came for breakfast at once". Sorry, a period of one hour doesn't constitute "everyone at once"!

Dear Ms Hosie,

Thank you for your recent feedback in regards to your stay at the Holiday Inn Express Manchester Salford Quays in February 2013.

After looking at your booking history I can see that when the initial booking was made it was for a Standard room. From reading the comments on your booking it stipulated the request for one double or two twin beds. As the booking was for 3 people we allocated you a family room which is made up of two double beds (two twin beds). I apologise if you feel that the team member who checked you in came across as disinterested, this is certainly not the case as the team always pride themselves on their good customer service. There clearly seems to have been a misunderstanding and for this please accept my apologies.

In regards to breakfast, we do encounter busy periods and as your stay was over the half term holidays and also a Manchester United home game the breakfast room can get busy. We advise guests of busy times but it is the guest’s choice when they choose to take breakfast and many leisure guests do come for breakfast within the same time frame so from time to time the area can be busy for up to an hour.

Whether feedback be positive or negative it helps us to improve our service and find new and improved ways to serve our guests so thank you for taking the time to tell us about your visit.

Yours sincerely,
Jane O'Mahony

Great location. I was delayed for a course I was attending and the staff on the telephone ensured the course coordinator knew of my delayed. They were polite and very helpful.
The room was spacious, although the bathroom door did open against the shower, jaming my finders, so be careful if you have little ones with you. The room was well equiped and the bed had a choice of pillows. I had a very comfortable nights sleep.
However, the room was slightly dusty on some of the skirting areas under the desk and on the socket points.
Breakfast was included in the price. It was a basic buffet style but enjoyable. I would stay here again.
