Selected staff which work behind the bar can be extremely rude and un welcoming, this had been brought up a few times amongst people I know that visit the pub. On a positive note the younger lads behind the bar have a good sense of humour and work there back sides off.

The room was tired and a bit dirty. No soap or shampoo just wall mounted dispensers. The restaurant was only passable, reasonable value but not great food or a good menu. Waiter kept calling me 'mate'. Breakfast was late and very poor quality. Perhaps they were tired out by their Christmas exertions.

Having stayed in De Vere Village Hotels before I chose this to stay at for a last minute Family meeting.
Due to being Boxing Day we arrived to a very crowded car park and hotel. We had booked a fully inclusive package for the first night, due to travelling and were looking forward to a nice quiet meal in the restaurant
After using the excellent leisure facilities. I went to get a coffee From the Starbucks, this had closed early because it was a Bank Holiday. We were then informed that the restaurant was not open that night though we could eat there the following evening if we wanted to, this being inconvenient for us as we had plans for the second evening. We were told we could eat at the Victory Pub area instead or have Carvery. This we did not want as it had been served all afternoon and certainly did not fancy leftovers.
The Room was very small and tired looking, overlooking a the flat roof area. This held a King size bed which was very hot and uncomfortable due to having a waterproof mattress cover on it and a grubby looking folded blanket as a bed runner. the bathroom was also small and basic with mould around the shower area wall. The corridor areas and stairwells are very tired and worn also.
We opted to eat in the Victory Pub. The meal was adequate, though Pub Grub, as opposed to the restaurant food we had booked and not much choice. The service was ok but I think some of the staff were on another planet and it took three attempts to get everything right. The breakfast was excellent and staff pleasant and efficient.
On checking out they had included food on the bill, but on checking our reservation they did without question remove this. Also beware they add a credit card charge to the bill and a pound charge for ordering newspapers ! Something I have never come across before and find these charges unreasonable as most people spend extra money whilst staying adding to the overall profit.

Room Tip: Look at other hotels in the area first.

Firstly, ignore the great reviews. They have obviously been written by people with no sense of smell, vision or taste.
I stayed in a junior suite which is more expensive than the standard rooms. Should I bother I hear you ask. Hell yes, for your money you get twice the dirtiness if that floats your boat.
The last occupants drinks were still left in our room, the bath towels had been dropped on the floor and then scrunched up on the exceptionally small towel rail in an even smaller bathroom. And the room smelt. No, unfortunately not of roses or the scent of fresh linen. More like eau de socks/jock strap.

Next stop the restaurant. Again, carpet not even hoovered and food left on dirty seats. We sent our order back and after the third time of it going back to the kitchen it eventually came back hot.

The only positive is that the staff have a sense of humour. They sure need it to work here.

Room Tip: Sleep elsewhere. Just not in the rooms.

Stooped here on business for 4 nights, I stopped in the junior suite...£ 105 per night!,, I am a great fan of the village chain however this is the worse hotel I've stopped in... Empty can of Stella in my room on check in, room smelt of smoke, took 4 days to change a light bulb!' truly awful , don't be deceived by the plush reception area..once checked in and you get to the lift area you pass back into 1980, in summary staff put a brave face on but the hotel and leisure centre are tired, outdated and dirty. Drive to the village at Ashton instead .

I have given the hotel a score of one - this is entirely for the staff who are warm and friendly and very very helpful - thank you for helping us get something from our stay

Do not stay in this hotel on any weekend in December - it is a rip off. The hotel has decided to run a function for £30 a head every weekend night up until Christmas which closes the restaurant to everyone else. During my stay the "residents had the option of room service (two chairs in a cramped room with no table eating off a side board staring at the wall, fighting in the bar amongst groups of drunken youths to find a table while a disco blares out or eating in the corridor.

Our first evening we tried the bar - eventually found a table (my partner is in a wheel chair so this strictly limits which bits of the bar can be accessed) eventually got a dirty table, had a plate of chips in silence as the music was so loud the only thing you could hear above it was the swearing from the groups of teenagers and then went and sat in the closed bit if Starbucks (another cash option which replaced the previous lounge area) and walked drinks back and forward. My abiding memory is the small children in pyjamas drawing in a bar surrounded by drunken youths.

Second evening we again went to the bar (there being no other option) where the staff were very helpful and found us a table although still not quite the atmosphere you would hope for a anniversary meal (had pub grub). Abiding memory is walking out the bar with others eating on table in the corridor as they had used the main upstairs bit of the bar for another party.

Having booked a month ago there was nothing on the website about this closure but they did try to contact a couple of days prior although by then too late to change plans. I do understand at Christmas sometimes late booked office parties may restrict times so put it down to that until walking in to reception there were six foot signs advertising their "casino and cocktail" nights which run every weekend in December.

I find the contempt exhibited by this hotel giving it's paying residents no option to have a quiet meal and relax appalling. My partner and I stay in various Village Inns at least once a month (and this one many times before) because we like the informal style but this cynical lack of care and abuse of goodwill I find shocking. Do not give them your custom because they simply do not care about you (unless you have paid £30 for a buffet and dance).

Great staff - terrible hotel

Room Tip: Somewhere else in December
