I would recommend this hotel to anyone. We drove ourselves and met our friends who we have known for almost 50 years and now live at the other side of the country.
When we arrived on Friday afternoon we were welcomed by very friendly staff who made us feel we had known them before, the Manager was on duty and sat in the bar so she could hear new arrivals first impressions and improve if necessary, though our comments were all positive. We were very lucky as I think our room was upgraded but all the rooms were pretty good I believe, although a little 'tired' very clean and tidied and vacuumed daily ( my only criticism was that the net curtains needed a freshen up!).
The food was great for us, we found that three courses which were on offer were plenty for our appetites and if extra toast or anything else was requested we got it!
I hope we can go to Shearings Hotels again and will consider the Prince of Wales again.

Thank you so much for your review - wonderful value for money is a great heading along with your recommendation for other guests to visit us. We look forward to welcoming you again and the net curtains are being dealt with as I write.
(I was actually off duty when you arrived but what better way is there to reccommend our food than to eat it myself and yes it is a great way to get feed back when incognito!!)

4 night break in October. Have been to many Shearings and in some ways this was a good one but not in others.

The good bits.
The hotel is in better condition than many Shearings Bay hotels, tired but not too bad, especially for the price we paid.
The staff we very friendly and extremely helpful.
Some meals were very nice, but always scant vegetables.

The bad bits
It is noisy. Some rooms more than others, but as the first picture attached shows, we looked across the car park and onto a busy road, you can see the bus! Just before the hotel travelling North, one goes over a railway bridge and the trains always whistle at that point and they run from fairly early till quite late. But the constant traffic noise we could hear came from the motorway just over the back. It was quite cold for our stay, so windows closed, but in summer it could be considerably worse.

It was quite cold in many parts of the hotel. The central heating seemed to come on at strange times, but certainly never in the morning when one is getting up. It was also quite cold in some of the communal areas downstairs, wondered sometimes how reception staff coped, they were in the coldest part.

Food was patchy. The first evening the asparagus soup was obviously made from powder because there were large lumpy powdery bits still in it. The vegetables are usually quite plentiful in Shearings but the ration we were given for 4 people was very mean, a word that we used several times here, and refused any more. The rolls were such that I think they bought them for a few pence a dozen.

At breakfast one of our party commented that he wondered if we could get more than the one slice of toast allotted per person and the one small pack of butter. Especially after they rigorously enforced the menu which said fruit juice or cereal or fruit by serving your order, seen the menu before but always self service and so one could have fruit juice and cereal. Also if you dropped items from the cooked breakfast, none were substituted, so one morning I finished up with one slice of bacon and one sausage. Asking for decaf coffee brought one sachet of coffee and a pot of hot water to share between two us.

Whilst this is a Bay Hotel and therefore part of the cheaper range of Shearings hotels it did seem to be so penny pinching that our party's enjoyment was impaired and it is unlikely that we shall return to a Bay and probably not to Coast and Country as a party. My wife and I are visiting another Shearings next week, where we have been before and see if the regime has tightened up there as much as it has done at this hotel

Do visit
The Bird & Deer Park at Prinknash, just a short drive away, it is great, see attached photos, but don't bother with the associated gardens despite being able to buy a combined ticket.

Room Tip: Overlooking the garden is quieter and nice

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, Im sorry you didnt enjoy all of your stay with us, as with any hotel/restaurant at the moment, the emphasis is on controlling costs and wastage whilst trying to maintain our high standards, the recession has affected us too - so while no two people eat the same amount of food we try very hard to make sure everyone is satisfied which is why there is the option to ask for more if required. The same applies to the heating/energy, we do not want anyone to be cold, or uncomfortable because they are too warm, so to accommodate everyone unfortunately we do sometimes have to rely on our guests to tell us if there is a problem, to be able to rectify it.

A nice friendly hotel which would benefit from refurbishment but without taking the character of the hotel away.

The rooms are of a good size, clean with tea and coffee making facilities available which is always a nice touch. We were lucky enough to have freeview on our tv but our friends didn't, so only had a choice of 4 channels which may be an irritation for some.

The bar staff were always busy either serving or doing other things which meant sometimes the bar was unattended, however, as soon as the bell was rung for service Mark or Jamie appeared to serve you. The bar area has a good size seating area, on the Saturday night the usual entertainment room had been booked for a private function so the evening's entertainment provided by Ian Lockyer who was excellent, was held in the bar.

The food portions are sometimes a little small but if you ask for more it is never a problem and the food is of a high standard with a good choice at each mealtime, the waitresses were always pleasant and helpful.

We would happily return again for a third visit.

Just returned home from spending four very enjoyable nights in this hotel, was there mon to fri morning.
Smashing entertainment, different show every night, bingo also if you like that sort of thing.
Very good food, with plenty of choose, all waiter sevice.
Very clean hotel, nice sized bedroom and bathroom, with very good white fluffy towels.
Good carpark with lots of room.
Staff were all very nice, and met some lovely people.
Nothing much to complain about really, other than to say the heating needs to put put on in the concert room and bar area, as we all found it very cold and had to return to our rooms for a cardie or jumper.
One other thing was the price of the mixer drinks,55 pence per shot, every drink l had, we had to buy two shots as one is really not enough.
We would stay here again if we wanted to visit this area again.

Room Tip: Make sure you take your own toiletries.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review, I am so pleased you had a great time. The heating is always difficult to control at this time of year due to the varying temperatures but hopefully after adjusting the timing controls we have it right now. We look forward to seeing you again.

The plan was to just have a restful weekend. That's just what we got. The staff were helpful and friendly, particularly in the restaurant. OK, the room could do with a freshen up but generally clean and tidy. Had a great day at the Wetlands & Wildlife Centre at Slimbridge as well as Berkeley Castle (and I'm not really a 'Castle' person). As long as you don't forget that this is the budget end of the market, you will definately NOT be dissappointed. Thanks Melanie and all the staff. :-)

Arrived early on a friday afternoon....no problems with check in by very good staff. Made way to bedroom to unpack and pleasantly surprised by size of room and positioning. If I was a picky person I could say the wallpaper needed refreshing...but hey...life is too short to worry about such things. Made way to the bar and met our friends over a few pints. Perhaps a tad disappointing for me there was no quality lager, but the real ales were OK. My mate drank the cider so he was well happy. The girls had plenty of variety for their drinks, but 35p a shot of lemonade seems a bit steep.

The bar staff were refreshingly different in that they were so busy doing other things as well that they often left the bar....but there was a bell and didn't seem to mind having it rung to attract their attention. The food we were served at breakfast and dinner was good and especially varied in the evening. I read somewhere on here that the portions were small but they did not mind if you asked for more and I always left the room full up. The food quality was excellent. The waiters and waitresses were quite attentive to your needs and always seemed to work well with the guests.

Late night sessions are available as there is a night porter. The lounge has Sky Sports so that was good for Saturday afternoon and the sunday matches. The entertainment was very good. One evening it was held in the bat because there was a function in their suite. To me that seemed to work so much better. We didn't bother with the Sunday night entertainment as it was in the suite which was not so welcoming in the way of seats etc. The chap on the saturday was excellent - Ian Lockyer. Engage him in conversation as he has many great stories to tell.

Overall a good weekend - well done Mark and Jamie in the bar, our Scottish waitress and all the very nice receptionists....We will be back one day.
