Our group of 17 staff from the School of Real Estate and Land Management at the Royal Agricultural University had a really great away-day at the wonderful venue of Berkeley Castle last week. When we weren't in meetings, we enjoyed a very informative tour of the castle, a relaxing wander round the Butterfly House and good food in the yurt. The cream tea at the end of the afternoon was a particular hit!

The castle is wonderful and our guide was very good with lots of very interesting snippets.

However, the food was very expensive and to be honest not that good. We had a salad meal and it was below average with nothing to say other than they should serve less quantity and concentrate on quality and it was far to expensive.

Recommend the castle but take your own food and drink.

It's good to read that you enjoyed your visit to Berkeley Castle.

We were however, very sorry to read that you were disappointed with the quality of the food in our Yurt Tea Room and that you also felt it was expensive. We have discussed your issues with the manager in question, she was also concerned and wished that you had raised these issues while you were here, so that we could have addressed them at the time.

We normally have excellent feedback with regards to the refreshments and facilities we offer in the Yurt and would always be keen to deal with any queries as they arise.

Staying in Painswick, this was a bit of a journey away from the immediate area but was well worth going. An added advantage for us was that it was open on a Monday - when you are on a short break to an area, it is sometimes disappointing to discover that places you want to visit aren't open until later in the week, bit for Berkeley Castle the converse is the case!
Also, it wasn't busy, so we could see everything at our leisure. Our guide - obviously very well informed - made our visit particularly memorable - we have visited many castles in England over the years, but had never heard of Berkeley Castle before nor realised its significance.
As others have said, it is very good value for money - we had not allowed sufficient time to explore the grounds fully, unfortunately - but we did also combine our trip with a visit to Edward Jenner's House - separate entry fee but very interesting, worth allowing time for that as part of your day.

Thank you for your wonderful review. Your positive comment regarding the fact we are open on Mondays was particularly useful. It's good to know you enjoyed the guided tour too. There are still lots of other people out there yet to discover Berkeley Castle - hopefully reviews such as yours will encourage them to pay us a visit!

This attraction really should have been 5 stars - it's a lovely castle in beautiful grounds.

Unfortunately our visit was slightly marred by three things:
1) the website said that the last guided tour was at 3.30pm and we arrived just about 3pm thinking that we were in good time - we were then told that the last tour had been brought forward to 3pm and we had to rush to get on it (and missed the start) - not the way that we wanted to start our visit.
2) our tour guide was obviously not feeling too well and we felt that we were missing the usual involvement in exciting tales and stories
3) we chose to finish our visit with a trip to the church, which was very interesting, Unfortunately when we returned at 5.10 the gate had been locked and the only way back to the car park was a long walk through the village (very interesting, but not what we had planned at the end of a long day!)

So, great potential, just a shame that a few things went wrong for us.

So sorry to read your review following your recent visit to Berkeley Castle and that you felt we didn't deserve more stars. I will address each of your issues in turn.

1. As you correctly state, the last guided tour takes place at 3.30pm. We're not sure what happened when you visited, our guides normally ensure that the last tour in the day always takes place, so that no one misses out on the opportunity to get the most out of their visit. We will investigate this and will make sure that this does not happen again.
We are extremely proud of the feedback we get regarding our guided tours and the fact that they are conducted by articulate, well informed, entertaining people rather than audio guides as with many other tourist attractions.
2. We have identified the tour guide who took you around and will try and establish what was wrong on that particular day. The guide in question normally gets rave reviews, so a you suggest, we can only assume that they were 'off colour' that day.
3. We had already heard from our Yurt Manager, Karen, about the fact that the door from the Church had been locked when you returned after the Castle had closed and that you had a long walk back to the car park. We were very sorry to hear this and hoped to respond to you, but understand that you declined to leave your contact details. I hope you are reassured to learn that we have now put a sign on the gate warning our visitors that it will be locked at 5pm.

If you would like to return again in the future we would be very happy to provide you with free entry to the Castle, I'm hopeful that a second visit would restore your faith and leave you believing that we do deserve more stars! Please get in touch if you would like a complimentary ticket.
