“Great experience”
Reviewed August 30, 2013 via mobile

This is a proper castle with loads of history, lends itself well to a classy hotel.
Our room - woodville - was jaw dropping being very much olde world but with all mod cons. Lovely to walk around the castle and grounds and the town of thornbury is only ten minutes away if you are eating out.
Would recommend for a special occasion and would be a brilliant wedding venue.
We got a deal including breakfast and dinner one evening which was good value.

“Beautiful setting”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

We stayed for Christmas, a few years back. And I must say it was a truly wonderful experience.
The rooms, food and settings made it all beautiful. Thoroughly recommend, and I must book up and go back very soon.

“Great Value Lunch”
Reviewed August 3, 2013

Firstly the setting is amazing, just perfect for a celebration, somewhere really special. The Tower room is a very romantic place to eat the delicious lunch. Food was very good but not Michelin star standard, however it was excellent value for money at £20 for three courses, so no real cause for complaint. Chocolate brownie was exceptional !

The main negative point, perhaps a one off was the very average service. We booked lunch for 12.30 and were shown to our table almost 40mins later ! Others had waited longer. Clearly they were short staffed and under considerable pressure. Service was Ok but not attentive or proactive. We were asked to pay our bill at Reception (unstaffed !) I waited for someone for at least ten mins.....they asked if we had enjoyed our lunch, I explained the service was disappointing, what I did not expect was for the Manager (?) to agree with me ! After three attempts we managed to get the correct bill, the queue of people for afternoon tea was starting to spill out the door, the poor man was clearly very flustered.

I think the surroundings and quality of lunch was certainly worth it, however if I had paid full price for an overnight stay etc I would have been a very cross customer if this was typical of the service . The message here is get the customer service right, fast - it lets a potentially great the Hotel down !

“Our most enjoyable meal in 5 weeks in England”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

The food at Sundial in Herstmonceux may have been better but the combination of wonderful cooking and the experience of eating al fresco on the lawn between the house and the curtain wall at Thornbury was unbeatable! The experience began with cocktails in the library and selection of appetizers and mains before we moved outside. Service was excellent and if we have the opportunity in future I'd have no hesitation in taking rooms at the hotel which is well-located for Bristol, the Gorge and all manner of local delights!

“Cream tea in lovely setting”
Reviewed July 21, 2013 via mobile

We struggled about how to celebrate my birthday with friends on a hot Sunday summer afternoon not too far from home and chose Thornbury Castle for a cream tea. We had a great tea with superb service, refills of tea scones cakes and sandwiches with the crusts off! It was a lovely setting and we had a superb time. Thanks to all there who made it so good for us.
