Description: Ronnie's restaurant in the heart of Thornbury has turned a crumbling 17th century building into a lively, stylish eaterie and coffee lounge. Recently voted South West Restaurant of the Year by The Good Food Guide, the dining room features exposed natural stonework and beamed ceilings hung with art works from Castle Gallery. Chef-owner Ronnie Faulkner brings years of training and experience in the kitchens of stars like Anton Mosimann to his inventive modern European cuisine prepared with a British twist. Signature dishes include seasonal dishes like seared scallops wrapped in bacon, Cornish lamb with baby spring veg and lemon. Local produce is the rule, and wines are supplied by boutique vintners with many available by the glass.

“disappointed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2013

As a group of 9 people we went for a sunday lunch. The menu is pretensous lots of fancy flavour combinations that dont work. They got 2 of our first courses wrong but did offer those as complemebtary when we complained. My monkfish was served raw although it was not described as sushi. It also looked like 2 slugs on a plate of yellow lentils. Half of good food is presentation and this just looked awful and tasted just as bad. The main course were better.the roast sirloin was cooked beautifullly if A little fatty for my taste but the vegetables were all over sweet, mashed carrot, red cabbage, spiced green cabbage and parsnips just some simoly cooked cabbage or similar would have been better.
the desserts were good and the staff excelent however. Maybe they were having an off day or the top chef was on holiday for christmas but overall the menu was too complicated and not executed well. What a shame.

“Excellent cooking at a sensible price”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 18, 2013

Three of us had a 2 course set lunch (£20) here and were pleased with all our chosen dishes. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. Service was professional and attentive without ever being intrusive or rushing us. My starter of pumpkin gnocchi was cooked with thyme and sheep's cheese, all flavours well balanced. The others had generous portions of very fresh mussels. We had three different main courses - bream; venison with spiced red cabbage; and turkey with trimmings. All were perfectly cooked and nicely presented. Alas no room for puddings. Highly recommend this restaurant for the quality of the cooking and presentation, and for service, atmosphere and value. Will certainly go back to Ronnie's when next visiting the area.

“Really disappointing, twice”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2013

we have been to this restaurant twice now and each time the experience has been really disappointing. Each time we have been given a table upstairs and there have been no other diners. When we have finished our meal in isolation and returned downstairs the downstairs area is full of happy diners and full of atmosphere. The food is very good but we had 2 roasts and 2 fish dishes as it was a sunday and there were roast potatoes for the roast dishes but nothing for the fish. My dessert was a doughnut with ice cream and trifle and my husband's was apple crumble with custard and sorbet! Very odd. Not recommended. It was a special occasion and it really spoilt the treat of eating out somewhere that is meant to be special.
